Hi guys

Sorry if these questions have been posed ages ago. With Telkom's new pricing, I will definately be getting ASDL. This is what I have been considering :

1.) Telkoms Home ( 384k down / 128k up ) @ R359.00
2.) SAOL as my ISP ( 30 Gb package ) @ R299.00

Monthly fees : R658.00
Once off installation fee : R404.00

Now my questions :
1.) What does the modem / ADSL network card cost and which is best for SA conditions ?
2.) What hidden fees / costs are there ?
3.) What is the story of Telkom charging per gigabyte ? If that means that I will pay R59 x 30 pm, then ADSL will not be affordable to me.
4.) At the 384k download speed, being connected 24hr a day, how long till I hit the cap ?
5.) What does it actually mean ' hit the cap ' ? Will my international access be cut off completely, and will I only have access to local sites ? And what will my speed be then ?
6.) What does 384k translate to ? I know that, ideally, on a 56k modem, I download at 5.6kb.sec, so does 384k mean I download at 38.4kb.sec ?

Thanks, I know these questions must've been asked a lot, but some help would be appreciated.

Hi

answers
1.) modem=+/-R1000, network card=+/-R150, people prefer linksys
2.) there is a fee of R92/month to telkom (for voice line, mandatory fee)
3.) telkom charging per gb, is only effective from 1 November 2005, nt sure if this is confirmed tho.
4.) it depends wat u doin within the 24 hrs. if u downloading, thn u can see wat the file size is tht u download. even surfing the net can use up some of ur cap but thats not a lot.
5.)if u got 30gb uncapped, then after 30gb your international access will be slow, nt cut of completely. if u got 30gb capped, thn after 30 gb both local n international will be cut off till the next month.
6.)yes, but it fluctuates, it will probable average 38.4 kb/sec.

1.) modem for a little as R450, average about R650-R850
2.) Yes, you still need to pay telephone line rental.
3.) We'll have to wait and see how this one pans out
4.)depends how much you actually download
5.)No, it won't be cut off completely, BUT it will be totally unusable
6.)Max = 48Kb/s, but yes, count on about 38-40Kb/s

No...if you take a 30gig account from your ISP, you won't have to take a 3gig account from Telkom and will not be capped in anyway at 3gig

I have just ordered ADSL 384 (22'nd July). I was quite excited about having broad band at home.

I have spent the last week or so reading this forum and have become quite despondent about the whole thing.

Can people comment on whether it is worth it in the end? Are all the hassles with 3gb caps, shaping, drop connections, etc... not making you fed up with the whole broadband idea?

yeah its worth it 4 me! u hardly get drop connections, evn if u do, it will be sorted out after a while in sum cases.

The only thing thats clear now is that they are designing a pricing structure to get you to give as much money as possible to them - then then will lie to your face about it.

They will offer justifications like "protecting network bandwidth" - while offering discounts the more bandwidth you use.

They will talk about recovering costs - even though the costs dont change wether you transfer 1 gig or 10 gig.

They will still shape the account because somehow if you transfer data at 192kps over p2p its got a negative effect on other users, while if you transfer data at the same speed over http then it doesnt.

Pity the linksyssa web site is so broken. Would be nice if you could actually see what the products are.

I agree that it is worth it. Only those without a life (girls, cars, quads, etc.) runs beyond the cap in any case..

Hey Pedantic,

I too am interested in using your services. How do I go about getting hold of your Telkom liason & how much sooner will they get things sorted out with Telkom?

Simply email us at [email protected] (Send your reference number if you have one already). We can't guarantee things will get sorted out sooner, however, we have a single point of contact with Telkom and get daily progress reports on our allocated installations.
