Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of purchasing another unit for my lounge, and need some advise. I am looking at 46" or larger, and have been looking at the various specials and not sure whether to buy a LCD or Plasma. LED looks out of the question as the maximum I am willing to pay is R7000. I will using this TV mostly for Movies and Sport. What would you guys recommend I could look at? Oh yes, and should I really worry about being brand concious, ie. Sony, Samsung, etc. or are the other brands of the same quality?

Thanx.

Plasma for sport and movies especially at the entry level. Samsung PS51E450 plasma or last year's PS51D450 if you can find one. What you connecting to the TV, what's room lighting like during times of viewing, and what's viewing distance?

The movies will be watched via the USB port, and then connecting the Standard DSTV to it for sport, etc., which I'm thinking of upgrading at a later stage to PVR HD...The Sun would be at the back of the TV in the mornings only...The viewing distance is around 3 meters...Should I be concerned about HD Ready or Full HD for Plasmas? Also should I look at particular brands, ie. Samsung, Sony, or is anything fine?

From 3m I wouldn't be concerned about FHD. The general guide is that you should be 2m from a 50" TV to fully appreciate FHD. Depends on the person though.

Go and check the Samsung PS51E450 or PS51D450 hooked up to HD PVR from your viewing distance. Even better if you can find a dimly lit store. Would be my pick for your tasks.

Will probably need curtains for the back, depends if the sun falls directly on the TV I guess.

I want to do a review between my LED (UA46ES6200) and my Plasma (PS50B650) quite soon but for now let me just say that my two year old 6 series plasma knocks the socks off my brand new 6 series LED.

Plasma FTW!

Both Full HD before the resolution wars start.

Think it's even older - 3 years?

Plasma is a much better tech and LCD is still playing catch up for the most part.

What's great about the entry plasmas I've mentioned is that they share similar picture quality (contrast ratio, blacks, colours) to the better ones with FHD and such, which I'm sure you can also attest is largely marketing gimmick unless one sits close.

Key is to not judge on brightly lit showroom floors (of which most are). It becomes a judgement of what's brighter = better, which is hogwash and exactly what the marketers/manufacturers need.

correct. 3 years. purchased july 2009. feels like yesterday...

difference is quite big for me. I know I posted once that they are so similar that one shouldn't even be bothered but there really is quite a big difference when watching over extended periods.

I suppose its fine if its the only tv as you cant really compare.

Even, the wife whose ideas it was to get LED, keeps on complaining about the difference. Serves her right. I will do my tv watching in the lounge, thank you very much.

The Plasmas sounds like a good option, though what's the difference between the D & E series. I know the E is the latest model, but anything else? I'm new to plasmas, so what's the electricity consumption like, thickness of screens (need to look good too, as it will be in my lounge:) ), lifespan, and anything else you feel I need to know about plasmas. I've got small kids, so they might hit their hands on the screen, with the previous LCD it was no problem, will it have any negative effects for Plasma...Sorry some questions might be really silly, just want to know as much as possible before making the purchase:erm:

D was 1365x768, E is 1024x768.

E has Real Black.

Electricity about twice as much as LCD (+-R25 per month extra?), shouldn't concern you.

They are narrow bezel and narrow depth.

200,000 hours at half life.

Glass/perspex screens, probably better than matte LCD screens regarding kids.

Each to their own, the two technologies excel in different areas and viewing environments.

For me, viewing in well lit conditions, predominantly live action content like sport (non-cinematic), the brightness of plasmas is too dull (even at max cell brightness/contrast settings).

Besides some home makers, I blame architects and interior designers. :p

Is there any explanation as to how plasmas at 0.5-1x the cost are superior? Thought LED-LCD was cheaper to make, ship, etc.

Thanx, Electricity ain't that big a difference, which is cool, and the other info is great :)
I've just checked briefly around, and it looks like the E450 is about R500 more the D450, should I just go with the E450 as it is the later model? :erm:

Go test both side by side from your viewing distance.

Personally I prefer the 1365x768 resolution of the D but as stated it's probably not noticeable from your viewing distance.

Both are well rated!

Found a store that has it in our area, so gonna try and get around to view it :)
They said that the Plasma range is phasing out with LCD/LED more popular, is it mearly a cost thing from the manufacturers where Plasmas cost more than LCD/LED...If I have a problem with the Plasma, there won't be an issue where I can't get parts to repairs?
Thanx once again.

Nonsense. Uninformed salesman talk. They just want to sell you an LED(-LCD). Careful judging under bright lighting, easy to get hoodwinked.

Cool, just making sure...I had a 42" Full HD LCD, and wasn't too happy with the movement and sometimes blurriness, so just want to make sure this time I buy the correct TV :)

Thats a whole different debate, but since LED models will supposedly outsell plasmas 14:1 this year, its simple economics that they would be cheaper to produce.

So business as usual then, yes? Taking advantage of the ignorant?

Rather presumptuous to assume the vast majority of the global TV buying market are so cunningly deceived by "store lights".

Without a doubt at the entry-mid range to the market. Proven time after time again.

Rather ignorant to underestimate the power of marketing, bright shop lighting and closer than home viewing distance judging.
