Hi ....

I will one day get a 42" plasma/LCD and am getting a TV stand build now. I'm only designing now and I've made the deptth 50cm. I'm going to place my centre speaker on this which is 27cm and leaves only 23cm for the TV.

How 'wide' are desktop stands usually? And while I'm at it, how wide on the TV's in general? I'm planning 1.6m - 1.9m long.

Thanks

1.6 is plenty long enough. If i remember correctly you have 2 floorstanding FL & FR speakers, so check how far you need those to be apart. Remember it's is best to toe them in slightly to the middle, and have the rear port standing 20 to 30cm from back wall.

Hi dotVIBE,

Thanks for the info. I'm designing a stand very similar to the one I posted initially(http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=1181&ppuser=7981) My problem is that it's going to be 50cm deep - and my centre speaker is 27cm. This means the section behind the centre for the TV will have 23 cm available. Is this enough do you think?

Other alternative is to wall mount it.

you will probably need to wall mount then. A 42" will have a wider stand than 23cm, you can be sure of that. Also, make very certain of the heights. If your centre speaker is on the bottom in front of the screen, the screen will need to be elevated so that you can look over the speaker to see the bottom of the monitor. I often lie down on the couch to watch movies, so I had to lift my LCD. It is also better to look slightly upwards rather than slightly downwards, easier on the neck.

As you probably already know, screen size is determined by one thing and one thing only. viewing distance. If you are sitting 2m from your TV, it is ridiculous yo buy a 50" Plasma. You at most need a 30".

You get some cool tilting screen mounts too, that works if you have to mount the screen quite high, then you can tilt it down to watch it easier.

Yip ... that was my next question. The speaker is 17cm high and probably will chop off the bottom viewing area :(

I guess you're right : best bet would be wall mount.

Thanks

well, or you can just build a box over the speaker for the screen to stand on.

My unit was wide enough, I built a box behind my front speaker. depends an what you prefer aesthetics wise, wall mount would not have worked for me.

dotVIBE ... good idea, I just don't want to install a box over my centre as it 'closes' the sound and muffles it. I actually went to see a few stands and they're about 30cm ... so I can either install on the wall or increase the depth to 60cm. I'll have to see.

Freak - nice, but I don't like sticking my components behind doors. I'm very lazy to open/close ;)

Yeah. Also check how deep your components actually are + cables etc. Though 50cm is probably enough. Another thing to keep in mind is to have a absolute bare minimum of 5cm airspace above your amp. Those holes on top are there for a reason ;)

btw, I agree on the doors. I have sliding glass doors on my unit, and the doors in front of the electronics is ALWAYS open :D

Since some of you are whipping out your tape measures ;) What is the average distance between the actual foot and the viewing area? Could I put my 17cm speaker in front of the TV if I use the stand? I'm pretty sure the magnet of the speaker won't effect the LCD/plasma - right?

And lastly, is plasma fragile and needs lots of care when installing? I actually read on a site they recommend an installer ...

between foot and and viewing area about 12cm. and no, the magnets will not distort the screen, unless you have seriously cheap junk speakers. They recommend an installer for plasma because it is heavy. LCD is lighter.

So there is a chance? My centre is not magnetically shielded ... maybe I should test it out :/

Thanks for the measurements.

Depends on the TV and stand. Mine is only +-9cm.
