Cape Town - A Boland rugby player who was involved in a fight during a match in Rawsonville was declared brain dead in a Worcester hospital on Sunday, SABC news reported.

According to the report, Worcester Medi-Clinic doctor Christo van Dyk said there was no possibility the Rawsonville Rugby Club's Riaan Loots would recover.

Loots was taken to the hospital after he was kicked and punched on the head by an opponent during a weekend match, the report said.

That is a little harsh

Many rugby players are probably declared brain-dead, before the match even starts.

One has to wonder at the motivations of people to want to play rugby cause they want too, I remember once I was in a scrum and a fist came up from the other side and hit me in the face and gave me a bleeding nose. Was it necessary, no!

Hope the man gets a nice criminal charge...

I dont think it is simply a player with "issues". It is a whole event that lead up to what happened. I do not condone any of this but know what goes on on a rugby field. They just took it past the normal "acceptable" level of aggression. I was also in a situation with the dirty Pirates rugby club here in Jhb a few years ago. Now there is not a game that they play without a few fights, no matter who the opposition is. They kept on with their nonsense and we kept our cool and because of that it got worse as they didn't get the reaction they normally get. Only after i had to let one of the pirates players leave the field things calmed down a bit. It is very important for a ref to manage the game and not just the players. But lot of the times you really get the local from the bar as a ref. (Not really that bad but it feels like it sometime on the field) Some people just get the wrong side out of a person, which doesn't mean they are like that normally.

Just to underline I Do Not Condone These Actions.
