Especially 1080p ones. Do they tax the CPU or the graphics card?

I think it uses CPU, I play 720p and 1080p files on my laptop (linked to my 50" Bravia via vga) and they play perfectly.

At first the 1080p files wouldn't play properly, but it was a simple change to my battery settings that fixed this :) Woops. (so that was CPU not GFX)

My laptop is a Toshiba A200, DuoCore 1 (not sure on processor speed), 2gb ram, intel graphics.

guys i just downloaded the new heroes episode in 720P HD (.mkv format) and now it won't work, it just gives a blank screen with a couple of unreadable words at the top. help.:o

Download the CCCP codec pack, that should fix it (and uninstall all others before you install CCCP).

A bit of both depending on the graphics card. Newer cards do a lot of post processing leaving very little work to the CPU.

well i just found out that none of my videos (mkv, avi etc.) work on vlc media player. i tried reinstalling and it still wouldn't work.

BTW: i'm capped. so no downloading

You've got some bogus codecs installed. Run the codec remover from the CCCP website and then install CCCP. It's all I use, and it plays everything.

I had a similar problem and how i fixed it was uninstalling all the codecs on my pc and install the cccp codec pack and install the latest divx codec pack and nothing else.
