PlayStation 5 vs Xbox Series X - Teraflops aren't everything

Sony and Microsoft recently announced the specifications of their respective upcoming consoles - the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

The Xbox Series X has been touted by many as being superior on paper because it has a higher teraflops (TFLOPS) performance than the PlayStation 5 - 12 compared to 10.28.
 
Yeah, no, 4.8 vs 5.5 GBps for storage isn't that much difference, especially compared to the computing power difference.

The Xbox will be the better console based on hardware, the question is more game support and pricing.
 
The I/O throughput figure for PS5 isn't correct @Bradley Prior.

The raw throughput for the Series X and PS5 NVMe drives is 2.4GB/s and 5.5GB/s respectively, and the compressed throughput is 4.8GB/s and 9GB/s respectively.

It's not fair to compare compressed vs. raw throughput.

I reckon the Series X has superior hardware to the PS5, but that won't mean a thing if PS5 has better games.
 
What will work to Sony's advantage is that Microsoft is limited by the limitations of PC hardware whilst Sony devs are free to look at new ways utilising the PS5's SSD tech

Huh?

They are roughly the same architecture... The limitations will exist across both systems. Arguably Ms has better experience with the pc architecture than Sony.

It's something to do with the speed of the PS5's SDD according to devs. Truth is I don't understand it myself and what innovations in gameplay experience this could result in... If any

Allows them to load things faster possibly or treat the ssd storage more like ram from a speed point of view.

But the Xbox has other things going for it that the ps5 doesn't... It will be a tough new Generation to call.
 
I dont think that their GPU's have 16GB of VRAM, thats more than a 2080Ti has.

I think I see where your confusion comes from.

GDDR and DDR are just standards. You can just DDR on a graphics card and you can use GDDR in a game console - the PS4 uses GDDR5 for example.

What these game consoles have is a unified pool of memory used for both the CPUs and the GPU. So, they don't have separate RAM and VRAM pools - they have a single pool, the implementation of which happens to use the GDDR standard rather than the DDR standard.

GDDR is higher bandwidth but higher latency as far as I know. But the bandwidth is so much higher that it is worth it.

PS5 is 10.2 TF variable, it's not going to reach that. Most of the time it's mid 9.x TF
It doesn't have VRS (a RDNA2 feature), or at least Sony hasn't mentioned it yet. They would if it was in it.
Does not have mesh shaders either, rather primitive shaders.
No ML engine.
The list goes on.

Let's wait for the first party games to be shown, and some initial announcements from MS very soon about Lockhart as well.

They use the faster gddr because it's shared by the cpu & gpu unlike a PC where it's dedicated.
 
Don't worry, digital foundry will do the benchmarks and tell it like it is. Fanboys will still lose their schit..

But lets not forget game exclusives, controllers and audio.
