Hi Johan,
Actually, Sentech's MyWireless(TM) Classic packages have these characteristics:
Type 1: "Up to" 128kbps connection speed with a 10GB monthly data allocation, with a virtually unlimited soft cap, for R499/month.
Type 2: "Up to" 256kbps connection speed with a 20GB monthly data allocation, with a virtually unlimited soft cap, for R699/month.
Nowadays even an entry-level ADSL connection will beat the speeds on Sentech's MyWireless(TM) Classic packages, but as far as pricing is concerned those Sentech packages still are hard to match/beat.
For ADSL, here is one of the best high-usage contenders:
http://www.axxess.co.za/uncapped.php
The backhaul connection for "Uncapped Express Plus" from Axxess is via fibre.
The backhaul connection for "Uncapped Express" from Axxess is via satellite, so it's cheaper but the latency is higher.
(But the latency isn't as sky-high as Sentech's!)
Note this: Those prices
exclude analogue line rental (R131.03 per month) and line speed provisioning (traditionally R152.00 per month for the 384kbps line speed category), so to get this connection you would end up paying
at least R1182.03 per month in total.
(Also note: Speeds are throttled
during business hours when your usage threshold is exceeded.)
If that is too high a price, you could also opt for a bundled offering from Telkom or WebAfrica for use as a base account.
If/when you have depleted your monthly data allocation, then you can buy top-ups.
Examples:
384kbps line speed provisioning including a 5GB data allocation at
WebAfrica plus analogue line rental = R581/month.
384kbps line speed provisioning including a 5GB data allocation at
TelkomInternet plus analogue line rental =
R522/month.
In this case, example # 2 makes sense because it would save you in excess of R50/month.
Now, when (or if) your 5GB data allocation is depleted before month-end, you can either top up the TelkomInternet account at R79/GB or you could switch to a pay-as-you-use account until month-end, then switch back to the base account when the new month arrives.
Certain ISP's have "sub-R60-per-GB" user accounts that could be worth your while:
G-Connect (Currently between R45/GB and R49/GB. T&C apply. Read the news article and forum discussion
here.)
Vox Telecom (Currently R50/GB. Set-up fees and T&C apply.)
MyISP (Currently between R55/GB and R60/GB. T&C apply.)
Axxess "626" Family ADSL account (R45/GB. Time limitations and other T&C apply.)
Vitality Broadband (Currently R44/GB. Note: Discovery Vitality membership required!)
By the way, your Sentech modem
auction was a hilarious discovery - especially the indicative market price!!! Thanks for the laugh!
