Hi there mybroadband peeps!

I was wondering if somebody with a good understanding of our local internet network/s could assist me with a matter pertaining to my MWEB 4MB uncapped account. I have noticed that over the past two weeks my account has been up and down in terms of actual download speeds, and also that packet loss is occurring at times. Also, I seem to have above average jitter on my line (according to pingtest.net) and I would very much like to find out what could possibly be causing this to happen to my account and/or adsl line.

I have been in contact with MWEB support, and have received one response from so far, to which I have replied and I am waiting for the next bit of response to take it further with them. However, if anybody could assist with any advice/recommendations as to why my account may be behaving like this, I would very much appreciate it.

Here is some info pertaining to my situation:

- I live in the Hillcrest area of Durban, KZN.
- I have a 4MB uncapped account with MWEB (the R899 one)
- packet loss occurring from time to time (more frequent during bad weather)
- I have a Chinese made wireless router - Tenda W150D (http://www.tenda.cn/tendacn/product/show.aspx?productid=389)

I have been monitoring my account in terms of download speeds, packet loss and jitter etc, using the following sites:

- capetown.spdtst.saix.net
- speedtest.net
- pingtest.net
- hostmycalls.com/tools/ (this is an online tool to monitor packet loss over a given period of time)

Now I can't give you every set of results that I received using the above mentioned sites, but I can give you a brief breakdown of them as follows:

- speedtest.net: highest download speed of 3.4 Mb/s (obtained about 2 weeks ago), lowest 0.45 Mb/s, and today I just got 2.06 Mb/s with an overall average latency of about 250ms to Berlin, Germany.
- pingtest.net: just did a test to Nuremburg, Germany; here are the results: 0% packet loss, 252ms ping and 25ms Jitter.
- tracert to bbc.co.uk:

Trace complete.

I know this is not an easy subject to give an accurate or definitive answer too, but as I mentioned any advice would appreciated as to why this could be happening.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Cheers!

Hi HouseRoKKa

I sent you a PM regarding the post, please have a look and provide me with feedack.

Sounds like a line quality issue. Care to post your SNR and Attenuation Rates?

Mode: ADSL_2plus
Traffic Type: ATM
Status: Up
Link Power State: L0

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 254 120
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 155 140
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 140 -19
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 25596 1168

Path 0
Downstream Upstream
Rate (Kbps): 4095 511

Hope that helps...

Here are some speed tests done on from the mybroadband speed test on this site:

LOCAL:

Test conducted on Mon Aug 27 2012 22:21:01 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 1153 kbps (144.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 418 kbps (52.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 58 ms

INTERNATIONAL:

Download Speed: 2454 kbps (306.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 360 kbps (45 KB/sec transfer rate)
