Hi all, I need to purchase an item from ebay is there anyone that has this experience and buys from ebay often I really need someone to help with a purchase of a EMU E4K Sampling Synthesis Controller SCSI HDD...Please pm me...thanks

I was in the same situation that you are in, and I did indeed take the plunge and bought an item on Ebay. It is actually rather simple. All you need to do is sign up for your free Paypal account, and then register on Ebay. Go to the item you want, and click on the Buy Now button, you will receive an email confirming that you bought the item. In the email you will be able to click a link that will take you back to Ebay, or you can just stay on Ebay, and then pay there. Ebay is directly linked to Paypal, so all your payments will go through Paypal itself.

It is easier than the site makes it look. After payment is done Paypal will take the money off of whichever bank account you specified, and then pay that to the seller. What's nice is, some sellers has one of those Buyer protection thingies with Paypal, where if you bought the item and it isn't ever delivered, you are covered for up to $2000. Which should be a huge load off of your mind.

Many thanks for this information, I'm a little confused on calculations i.e. postage and exchange rates etc

Here is todays exchange rates:

south afr
USD = R7.3330
EUR 1.2969 = R9.5102
GBP 1.9497 = R14.2972

I paid 39.99 pounds for my item, P&P was 5 pounds, and it worked out to just under R630.

The cost of postage is determined by the seller. Depending on how it is sent it will differ. The seller should state on the page how much P&P is, even if he doesn't after you have bought the item on the page you will get an email with the cost of the item as well as the P&P cost, which they add to it.

The only other thing will be import duties. I don't know how much you will pay for that. I think mine will be like R20 when it arrives. That is a hidden cost of course.

This is the item which I need to purchase so I have to be sure that I have the correct amount to pay before just buying:

Postage is a problem, eBay has a little postage cost calculator, on one item I wanted (which was about $15) the postage was like R400 worth.. and the item was just a vintage computer game, not heavy or big!

It's usually best to contact the seller and ask them to calculate for you. Or ask a friend of yours overseas if you can have the item sent to them and then they post it to you and maybe lie about what's inside the parcel! :)

that seems like a pretty normal 9.1gb seagate 50pin scsi drive.
they have jumpers to tell them when to spin up, or to delay spin up until the controller tells them to. I really dont see why you need to get one from the states.

the jumpers setting is called "motor start"

from reading (quickly) some of the emu boards, the only thing to be aware of is that the keyboard power connector is reversed, so plugging it into a normal hdd will blow it up. (the + and - are swopped around).
so, job 1) reverse power connector
job 2) go find any old 9.1gb scsi hdd and fit it. corporations tend to get rid of these by the bucketload, and they normally bought 5 at a time for raid setups that are no longer big enough.

ebay.co.uk list 9.1gb starting at ÂŁ2.99 buy it now.

Thanks for the info I'm battling to try and get one over here 2nd hand but to no avail, I can get a new SCSI 73GB for R3000. but really that's just too much. And they only seem to start from 73GB at this rate I might as well dump the E-MU E4K Sampling Synthesis Controller

And no one seems to have one lying around that works and is not using I'm prepared to pay for it I don't expect it for nothing

There are indeed some who are prepared to help me to get from the states but I'm not rich and I am disabled and not getting a salary so this is difficult for me to raise the cash it's not the product that's expensive it's the postage etc

PS: I'm a member of that forum and have already read the topics...Thanks once again for your help

it'll work if you get an adapter.
max draw is 1.6amps at startup

/me also have a few 9gb and 18gb SCSI drives lying at home.
Those Single-edge-hot-swapable types...

Will go look again

Pretty please!
68 to 50 pin converter that should be on the rear of the hdd, then I need a convertor to convert it to the scsi on the e4k, which as far as i can tell is the 50 pin IDC variety.
I would also need a 50pin cable...from e4k to adapter.
