PLEASE explain this to me?!?!?

Hi there,

This is now the 4th time that this has happened and i have NO idea how the guys are doing it!

I will get into the office and one of my sites reports that the software wont run. So i log in there and EVERYTHING is set to run with Word. I mean EVERYTHING!

Usually it's Windows Media Player, but in this mornings instance, it's Microsoft Office Word. How do i set the Programs to go back to their normal startups and what or how are the guys doing this constantly? Grinds me SO much :mad:
 
Right click on the file you want to open,left click on "open with", left click on "choose default program"
then select the correct program also select "also use select program to ...."

My father-in-law phoned me a couple of days ago about the exact same thing. All the .lnk files were set to open in Word. Turns out he opened some file that had a .avi extension. It obviously wasn't a vid file, but something that changed the reg settings.

I'll try and find the link to the site which had reg files to correct it...

Here is the link containing a list of reg exports for each default app...I had to use the lnk one

Yea when i do this it just changes EVERYTHING to run with that program, instead of just that particular program changing :( The only way i have found to get around this is to restore back to a previous date. I would still like to know though, how this happens if anyone could tell me?

They must have opened a file that changed the settings in the registry.

BTW: just check if it's only the .lnk files that changed...

The machine has a virus or they are opening naughty and dangerous sites.

Well Virus is what i thought... But check this out:

- No Internet Access as sites purely run over a private Wireless network for transfer of data to H/O.
- Had this same thing happen on 3 DIFFERENT sites, which all have nothing to do with each other.
- Never had any kind of virus on the systems in the last 2yrs.
- If it is a virus it could only have come from things being plugged into the USB ports. (Not supposed to happen but hay, when no-ones looking who will know right?)

Now i'm thinking Is it coincidence that the SAME virus happened to attack 3 different systems operated by different people while there is NO traces of ANY other kind of virus on any of the systems. This is why i'm wondering if there is a place that the guys can implement this from within Windows?

Thanks for the link you sent. The issue is not with File extensions though, from what i could see. To put it simply it's like someone found an option that said "Do you want to make every single thing on your PC run with one program?"

Still relatively new to MyBB, so if you could let me know how to upload pics to this thread or where to upload to, i can show you a screenshot of the desktop and start menu...

been here a while and they keep changing that option. I find it tedious so just use photobucket.

Perhaps you could create a batch script to change everything back again and make it start at login.

For now what i have done is restored the system back to the previous day, which has helped on all 3 systems, but i would like to know HOW this is happening so that i can take the necessary steps to stop it from happening again.

Install a keylogger on the systems.

There are a few free ones out there.
