This sounds like it should be in the gaming section, but it's hardware related.

I bought the best sellers edition of Colin Mcrae 2005 (DVD). The problem is when I insert the dvd and close my dvd writer nothing happens, the lead on the dvd writer flashes and flashes and I can hear the drive trying to read the dvd. I have left it for over 10 minutes, but nothing happens. So the first thing I did in my pissed off state was contact codemasters customer support, having sent a whole bunch of my pc information through to them and explaining what was going on, they adivised me to upgrade my firmware, this is quite a new dvd writer(not 2 years old yet). It's the TS-H552U Samsung Dual Layer 8.5GB.

So I went along and updated my firmware using the liveupdate from samsungodd.com, Latest version US07. The update completed successfully, but i still have the same issue. I have not even installed this game yet, nothing happens. Even if I restart my pc and quickly put the dvd in(at the POST screen), the drive makes the same sound and cannot access the disc, the lead keeps flashing and flashing. This tells me that it's not a windows problem either.

Man I just bought the Logitech Formula Force GP Steering Wheel and Colin Mcrae, this really sucks, anyone have an idea what I could do? Maybe set manual values in my bios setup for the drive like CHS and LBA? Everything is set to automatic, the way I like it. I've got Far Cry and a few other games on DVD, they read correctly in the dvd drive (so it's not the drive that's screwed either).

Please any suggestions would be appreciated .

ciao!

I included my regional settings in the support request to codemasters, they didn't say I should change it, I'm using region 2, and I'm not sure what region to change it too, I'm not going to try a few(can only change it 4 times)

Maybe theres something wrong with the DVD as I assume everything else works on the drive otherwise you would have mentioned that there is a persistent problem..

Could be a problem with the DVD, I'll take it to a friends place tomorrow and test it.

Try it in the other DVD player and get back to us, from what I have heard is sounds like its your DVD player.

Firmware upgrade should fix it

I haven't got the Starforce copy protection installed, (it won't load starforce while I'm at the POST screen.) I don't see any dvd region logos on the disc cover either. Thanks for all the help and feedback guys!

I just tried it in anormal DVD player, I see 2 folders on the Tv, videos and streams, so I guess it's my pc dvd player, WTF>?

Is 3+ region 3? I see a 3+ on the front cover,

I tried to change the region, but windows says, unable to update region, please insert region 3 media and make sure you have administrative privelages

The drive has actually been quite good to me, I think codemasters are busted, why tf do you create a starforce protected disc and it's not compatible on most dvd players (samsung being one of the leaders)

Samsung Drives have many problems, but thats another story. Put it this way if they disk does not work, you cant copy it.

What would the case be now if he were to download the game and burn it to DVD, as he has already purchased it and has a legal key..?

DVD Region codes do not apply to data discs. It's for movies only.
Star force works with hidden IDE drivers - it wouldn't apply until the game was actually installed.

The problem is most likely one of two things - I would suspect that the disk is faulty, or there is an issue with your drive's firmware.

There is a problem with the drive, it reads and writes other dvd's very well, just not this one, no matter. I stole my sisters dvd writer out of her new pc, she will never notice it, it's also a samsung, but it read the disc and i'm playing it already, just don't tell my sister

We have this problem with out Mecer supplied DVD drives and certain Microsoft Developer Network DVD's.
These DVD's are not copy protected, there's something different about their format that the DVD drive simply cannot read.
We've asked Mecer to replace the drives 3 times and they have replaced the drives but the new drives don't work either and we have simply given up on them [mecer].

We've got DVD drives purchased 2 years ago and they read the DVD's fine.

These "faulty" DVD drives are marked : DVD Dual [Double Layer] 16x DVD RW Dvd rewriteable Compact Disk Rewriteable Ultra Speed.

I have no idea what's special about the new MSDN DVD's.
This is a mystery to me, and Mecer as well apparently ???????

P.S. We've tried every flipping thing imaginable to get these 23 drives to work. EVERYTHING, on an individual basis as well, so the range of solutions tried is huge.
