Hey all, after all the talk of how uncapped accounts are all starting to become express accounts are there any ISP's that can offer me a 512k uncapped solution where I do not have to pay setup fees, and can use my own router? I need it only for browsing and e-mail, I watch a ton of online videos and what this means is that telskum's 3gig accounts are burnt through in a day. If there are any ISPs who will let me surf as much as I like for a reasonable price why not talk to me :) Help me out guys this industry is getting crazy, more like... stupid but hey who is keeping track? :)

We have just launched Fair Usage Uncapped ADSL packages on the SAIX backbone.

I don't know if this will meet your requirements but there is no set cap on these accounts. The accounts are, however, subject to a Fair Usage Policy which is the only way we can provide an uncapped solution on the SAIX backbone and not charge you for the moon.

Depending on your requirements, these packages could give you the peace of mind of not being capped as long as you are fair in your usage.

Other than the standard package, there is a Lite package if you have a light traffic requirement, and a Plus package if you have a heavier than usual traffic requirement.

These packages start from R1495 per month.

How many gigabytes are fair?

As these are uncapped packages there is no set cap which means there is no set amount of Gb's that is considered fair.

A pool of traffic is set aside for all users which is then shared by all. If your traffic usage starts to dramatically impact on the traffic available to other users then you are not being fair in your usage.

This would therefore be a totally variable amount that would depend on a number of factors including the usage pattern of all other users.

Obviously, if you are on the Lite package the "fair usage" would kick in sooner (there is a smaller pool of traffic) than if you were on one of the other packages, and if you were on the Plus package it would kick in a lot later (there is a much larger pool of traffic).

It is not going to work.

Telkom/SAIX has ruined our market with the focus on cost per gigabyte. No-one wants to feel they are "losing out."

The idea of people cross-subsiding each other and being governed by a fair usage clause is all well and fine when the basic cost is low and your have a huge number of people who browse and send emails and who purchased the package for its affordability.

People paying R1500pm (plus their Telkom rental) for internet access are going to make absolutley sure that they are getting their money's worth. Sad, but true.

Well I pay R1539pm for IS uncapped, and it is uncapped - no guesswork about what is fair or not. I'd be very hesitant to change to a package with a mushy "fair" limit.

You are absolutely right about Telkom/SAIX having ruined our market with their ridiculous cost per GB system.

We wish we could provide packages like these at a truly affordable rate. Something like this should only cost about R400 to R500 pm including Telkom rental instead of R1500 pm excluding Telkom rental.

Telkom makes life difficult for all of us and we are trying to do the best we can under the circumstances.

Unfortunately, the "fair usage policy" has to be used to prevent people from "getting their money's worth" even though we would love to give people their money's worth.

Maybe this won't work but at least we can say we tried.

We have another unique ADSL product in the pipeline and maybe that will work.

I may be wrong but your IS uncapped required a setup fee, you have to use an IS router which is not accessable by the user, you are restricted to 512 kbps, and the account is intended for business uses only.

None of these restrictions apply to our DSLXtreme packages.

But everyone has their own requirements and the package you have is suitable for you. Our packages may be more suitable for someone else or maybe not but we are at least trying to give people more choice.

Yes - setup fee - say it adds another R100 to the price over the term of the usage - not too heavy. Yes - Cisco router - no need to muck with it. Yes - 512 kbps - fine for me. Yes - business use - I'm in the business of leeching.

Your point is fair enough. I'd want to smack at least 50 gigs though.
