Please help a Mac noob with some basic questions

5) equalizer - as per post #15

I also use "SRS iWOW plug in - makes a huge difference to the sound

Thanks, will take a look.

Should just work.

Presumably your router is setup for bridge mode and this does work on your network?

Working now, just had to try connecting a few more times. Eventually authenticated.

Pray tell what it lacks? Pretty sure it's just a logic change that's required.

Little annoyances.

Like no easy cut/paste. No way to list folders first. No up one level. No way to view info of multi folders without it opening up a separate info window for each folder.

Tabs were only added in Mavericks. I also miss the ability to connect directly to sftp servers.

Thanks.

Thanks, but then the problem is having to select all the pics to scroll through them all. :p

Found a great solution - JustLooking 3.3.3 which I'm now using as default. http://justlooking.soft32.com/

That's it, will try again. I'm simply entering the details with a service name, not modifying any advanced settings. Advanced settings are set to use PPP to get the necessary details.

I would strongly urge you to get used to the "stock" way of doing things before jumping for third party windows like clones.

It will make your life generally easier to get to follow "Apple logic".

⌘ + A will select all the files in the folder. If you have your photos in folders, open them in Icon view... it'll make it easier to scroll through.

⌘ + X to cut and ⌘ + V to paste. I actually like the way Finder works... Have All My Files set to open arranged by Kind and folders are generally set in Column view and that works for me. Tabs also help and you can show a path bar in finder if you want to... I guess everyone finds a way that suits them best as you go.

OP, a few keystrokes that'll help: ⌘ + Q to quit an app, ⌘ + W to close a window, ⌘ + C to copy a file or folder, ⌘ + S to save and ⌘ + Z to undo as well as Fn + backspace to delete... Oh, ⌘ + O will open a file... It's late, there are plenty more, I just can't think of them right now.

Thanks, will try this out and keep trying the stock way.

Have noticed that many ⌘ combos are the same as Windows that would usually use Alt etc.

Pretty much. Actually I don't really know why I didn't use keystrokes all the time when I was on Windows machines and now it just feels weird when I do.

Yeah, one thing I did use with Windows, although the OS X keystrokes seem better.

Can't seem to cut and paste a folder in Dropbox (from one folder to another). Any idea?

Had to copy and then delete the original.

cmd+c to copy the folder then cmd+v to paste (where you retain a copy at the original location) or cmd+alt+v to move it.

4) creating shortcuts on desktop.

Right click the item for which you want to create a shortcut (make alias).
Then within a finder window, drag & drop the alias onto the "Desktop" icon in the sidebar.

Alternatively drag any item to the desktop (or any location) while holding down alt+cmd. Holding down only the cmd key while you drag will copy.

It should be noted that the above works when staying on the same drive. If you want to move an item to a location on a different drive, as opposed to copying, hold the cmd key.

4. How do I create shortcuts on the Desktop?
If this is something you want to do on a regular basis add it to your contextual menu.

Open automator

Create a new Service

Look/search for New Aliases and drag it into the right pane. The New Aliases should be set to "Desktop"

Service receives selected "files or folders" in "Finder"

Save this service and close.

Then when you want to make an alias on the desktop right click...

Cool, thanks. Lots to tinker with. :)

7. Where can I set what closing the lid etc. does? Can I disable the power button? Or set it to act as Delete? :o

You can also create a service to rotate images ;)

What do you want closing the lid to do?

If you want to delete a file in the finder just hold the cmd and tap the backspace - if you want the backspace to act like a delete button in something like word hold down the function key instead of cmd.

A power button trick - if you press and realise the button you will sleep the laptop - if you press and hold you get the menu to restart/sleep/shutdown.

The ability to set system wide, or only app-specific shortcuts is a very useful feature... [Might have been possible over in Windows - but I never tried!]

By way of silly example - here I created shortcuts for various coloured flags, for my emails in Mail.
I created Smart rules/folders to group my emails, as per the colouring of the Flag...

Simply created the shortcuts in Preferences, only for use in Mail - and they are there to be used...

Preferences setup:

Same can be done for any Services you create.

As I suspected. Logic problems.

Cut/Paste works by simply dragging and dropping. Open two windows and drag/drop from one to the other and it moves the file/folder. Unless it's not local storage then it will copy it.

Not sure what up one level means?

Multiple viewing? Hold in Alt. So select what you want and press Alt + Apple + i and it displays information for all of them together.

Tabs were only added in Mavericks. I also miss the ability to connect directly to sftp servers.

A feature I would never use having spent years with multiple windows.

Now SFTP servers...there's a valid one I dearly miss natively. Cyberduck does the job for me though, but you are right native support on a Linux system should really be supported.

SCP via command line also works well enough.

[-]Info for multiple folders alt+cmd+i[/-] (already answered above)
