If you need a line for work and you are covered by ADSL get ADSL ... no question.

iBurst is not a mature service ... give it another 6-12 months to sort itself out.

PS: I recommend Home384 ADSL rather than the 512k variant.

Get ADSL on monthly NOT THE 24 MONTH CONTRACT SCAM!

Sadly, I agree with hArTh, despite the fact that I hate telskum, get HomeDSL384.

Another factor that you may not be aware of: the 3GB cap-
if the stuff you are going to d/l and/or email is only international, there isn't much difference between DSL & iBurst. If the stuff is mostly local, then you are better off with DSL since iBurst will apply the cap locally as well as internationally.

Realistically speaking, on a 3gig cap, you could download about 20 x 5meg pics a day using ADSL until your cap was up.

Same with iBurst.

Home ADSL 384 will set you back approx. R780 per month all inclusive.
Upfront costs :-
Buy your own DSL Modem :- R600 for a decent DSL router
ADSL Line installation :- R404
Pro's: You can switch ISP at any time / Month by Month contract / Proven technology / Good latency (if you play online games)
Con's : Not mobile / Expensive / Long wait for installation - up to a month

iBurst will set you back approx. R600 per month all inclusive (no contract)
Upfront costs :-
Buy the iBurst Modem - you can only get it from them :- R2800
Activation fee :- at present, R456 - there is some confusion about this.
Pro's :- Mobile / Cheaper than ADSL / Quick installation time - no more than a week
Con's :- Proprietry tech = locked into one provider / unproven tech in terms of large amounts of users effecting speed / Expensive setup costs

I agree with the ADSL option. Just my 2c worth...

In my opinion iBurst have good intentions, but they don't seem to be doing anything convicning. Their service is good, but it is already detereorating and when they have many users... who knows?

ADSL is a known quantity and has been around for longer. Wireless providers have a loooong way to go in this country. Maybe I'm wrong about iBurst - time will tell. For now, go with ADSL - you could even get a bigger cap if required.

For email, I'd register a domain and go with a company that offers cheap hosting (some are as low as R10 a month!) and then you can get whatever email addy you want (pretty much). It's cheap and worth it - plus, if you change ISP you'll keep your email address ;)

If you live in Plattekloof I would have coverage in your area tested first. In Cape Town according to the website only the CBD site is live. Although it looks like there is coverage in Plattekloof from the CBD site coverage map I was informed that due to timing problems in Tableview connections are restricted to I think he said 10 or 12 km i.e. Plattekloof would not be covered although in progress sites should be up for the commercial launch is what I am told.

ADSL!! Get ADSL!!

It's by FAR superior to iBurst in every way!

Why?

Because for starters you actually get a connection that's worth something and doesn't crawl along at 2-3kbps! And it's realiable!

William, first check if you can get ADSL in Plattekloof.

Also living in Plattekloof, I've applied a long time ago and they still can't provide it.

Currently I use 3G during the day + ISDN after hours.

Send me your contact details as a private message and I'll explain more.
