I need help setting up data for someone who, like me, has no idea what they are doing....
Has a cheap MTN contract, R60 /m with the usual voice/sms and data.
But , has Mac laptop and spends all free time on the Facebook. Whats app etc using my adsl at home. Guesstimate at 5 Gb /m.
Now moving to a flat and needs her own setup.
People tell me Afrihost. Where do I start please.

I have the Afrihost 2+3gb sim (R145/month) in a Huawei mifi (~R900 from Afrihost).

If she doesn't need portability, then i'm sure there are other 3G access points available that would be better...

BUT, I've found recently the speeds/signal on Afrihost to be quite iffy - e.g. in Sandton I get wild fluctuations up like 30kBps while on Cell C i get 400kBps. In Centurion, i have to search for a good spot for signal, and again struggle with throughput...

YMMV based on location and congestion?

Alternatively... ADSL seems like it'd be overkill and cost too much.... what about iburst?

Like everything in life it can be sorted. With more money unfortunately...

Purchase an omni-directional antenna with a mikrotik 411u router to plug that dongle in. I get 500kbps download speed on a 21Mbps dongle.
 
Come now guys....no dingles or dongles , just plain 4 letter words.
She's moving to Paulshof. Wroxham road opposite Porche

go there and see what the MTN speeds are, then decide if AH can work. Then call AH (contact page above)

You could also look at ADSL if the infrastructure is available at the new place, otherwise Mobile is awesome :)

I'll do a speed test when I visit . Old tenant not out yet but maybe just test at the gate ?

It has been done for one of my old farty clients :p
with all their aids (hearing aids, walking aids, seeing aids...)
Please can the gent be assisted with a telephonic application?

I will volunteer to assist him as best I can, but he is probably nowhere near me.
