Hi, I need a bit of help

I have always connected to the internet using my router's setup page (192.168.1.1). It worked perfectly for a long time.

Suddenly today it stops working. So I go Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a New Connection, fill out all the information and create a desktop shortcut.

Clicked the desktop shortcut, connected and it works.

Anyone know what could have went wrong? I prefer using the connection as I used to.

I'm almost certain I didn't change any settings.

You really need to provide more reliable information regarding your situation. Here is what I understood from your poor post:
Hi, I need a bit of help

I have always connected to the internet using my router's setup page (192.168.1.1). It worked perfectly for a long time.
So your router used to dial a PPPoE connection (using your credentials of your ISP), allowing any network device (eg. a PC) on your home network Internet access without the devices having to make additional connections to gain Internet access.

Suddenly today it stops working. So I go Control Panel > Network Connections > Create a New Connection, fill out all the information and create a desktop shortcut.

Clicked the desktop shortcut, connected and it works.
And now your network devices don't have any Internet access, UNLESS you create and dial a PPPoE connection from the respective network device. I assume that you implied that you created a PPPoE (Broadband) connection, since there are a few other options too when you just "fill out all the information".

Anyone know what could have went wrong? I prefer using the connection as I used to.

I'm almost certain I didn't change any settings.
It's possible that you've deleted/disabled all the PPPoE connections on the router and set it in bridge mode. If you've done this, then it would explain why you don't have Internet access on any network device, until you establish a PPPoE connection from that network device.

Were you previously able to establish PPPoE connections from both the router and PC's simultaneously?

Please provide your router name/model (eg. D-Link DSL-2500U) and the ISP account that you're using (eg. MWeb consumer 384kbps uncapped).

Sorted.

For some reason (seriously, I have absolutely no idea why since I haven't been on the settings page for ages) the router deleted the ISP settings from itself...

I re-entered settings and it worked again.

This is strange since it is supposed to be (or I was told) a really good router (Cisco-Linksys WRV something...)

I have seen that happen on a few routers before, cant really say why.
