ok, i'm getting highly irate with this whole adsl thing, this is whats happened:

a few weeks ago, when i first got adsl, i got the modem (marconi 4 port router), set it all up, it worked for about a day or two, and then conked out, finally after reading all the threads on this forum, and working out my modem was bust, i called telkom, and they sent a techie, who confirmed my theory and told me to go to the telkom shop where i bought the modem and replace it for a new one.

i plugged it in today, and all seemed fine, all five lights were on, and flashing every now and then, i was very excited to see that i just might be able to use my adsl properly, so i started the computer up, and tried to connect, to no avail.

again, it was the damn “connecting through WAN miniport (PPPoE) ” thing, but instead of just hanging after that, it actually went into “verifying username and password” and then “registering your computer on the network” after taking about five minutes.

Then it connected, saying it was working at 100 mb/s.
So still I was happy, even if it took long to connect, I might still be able to use the net at great speed, but no, it is slower than a 56k, in fact, just trying to get onto google takes longer than I even have patience for.

Now can somebody please help me, it is only every now and then that I can connect, sometimes it comes up with various error messages and numbers. I am truly stuck.

Please help.

I take it that you are using PPPoE!
What are your VPI/VCI settings?

Have you just re-connected the new modem/router, or have you cancelled the Broadband connection[Removed it completely] from Control Panel Network connections, and set up a new connection ?

s_m, I'm totally unfamiliar with routers, ADSL or otherwise, but for the sake of clarity [on the PPPoE issue], the router that you have, does it support USB, and is it attached to your PC via a USB cable or via an ethernet cable?

Ok, just read yor post a bit more, what firewall & anti-malware do you have installed? - if your connection appears to be running verrry slowly 90% of the time it will be malware chowing your bandwidth...
