For months I've been receiving calls from unknown numbers. I'm also receiving many calls from known numbers and my spam contact list (which I also block) has grown substantially. When I answer it, its either a long silence or some recorded message. In the past hour, I've received 10 calls - this is extremely abusive and I'm forced to also block all unknown numbers.

Is there anything that can be done besides changing numbers? I wish I could report these people, but I can't if I don't know who it is.

Yep, get a call manager and block 'em all.

I'm using call control, but my phone still rings once before it blocks it. Its still really annoying. Surely there must be a way to report / trace this?

I tried this, but CellC were disinterested. A major step, but you could change your phone number

I've had this number for years (+/- 10 years) and I've always been cautious on giving out my number, but someone must of put it on a list.

I wish I could open a case of harassment.

I had a similar situation about 2 years ago. I changed my number and it stopped immediately. I sent SMS to whoever I thought should have the number and reprinted my business card, advised the bank, but no-one else

On call control you can set it to mute blocked calls, so it doesn't ring and select the call blocking method.
Under settings.
It is annoying - I now block all private and unknown calls. If the person is legit they must leave me a message

That is a good idea (mute calls). It might well solve your problem and is easy to test

Yes, to both FNB and Telkom.

I've been playing around with Call Control and there is a setting which says "Remove Partial Ring" (Experimental), anyone know what this does?

Something interesting to note:

The calls I've been receiving are definitely automated. So I answered one of them and it was completely silence. After that, no more calls.

I assume the system does a redial when the call is sent to voicemail?

Anyways, Vodacom says the only thing I can do is open a case with the police (like thats going to make any difference).

Vodacom's comment is a cop-out. We all know that to speak to the SAPS is a waste of breath. V could sort it out if they so wished, there are many avenues for ascertaining a blocked phone number, even if the caller has made it so. They just do not want to be bothered

I also block all private/unknown numbers. CM10 has a nice built-in blacklist feature so my phone doesn't even ring, I can however get it to show me a notification of which calls were blocked. I agree that if it's urgent the person can leave me a message.

I must say I haven't received too many of these calls lately. *touch wood*

Was on the verge to open a case myself. Got these calls from a 'withheld number' on my vodacom number for a few months with nothing but silence on the other end of the line. The call tended to last 10-11 seconds unless I make an audible noise/say something at which point the call would end. At times the call would be followed by an identical call on my landline.

In the end I found out it was Telkom that was trying to sell me a closer package

Answer the phone then just leave the phone on your desk indefinitely until you cause them to go bankrupt \o/ The owner will then come looking for you (cause he'll clearly be mad)...You then use this opportunity to woo him into giving you his number. Once you have this number, you'll need to anonymously donate a large sum of money to that company in order to let them start up again. Then using the number from earlier, you sign up everywhere with it until eventually the owner starts getting phone calls every 6 minutes \o/
