Okay, I know there's been cases like this posted here(according to google) but none of them seems to have a solution.

A few years ago we got ADSL384 and it worked until one day when the modem kept on disconnecting. I discovered that our land line had a crazy amount of static noise even through the ADSL filter. Oddly when I then called the Telkom center I discovered that the static disapears the longer I'm holding for an operator. During that time my internet connect almost perfectly.

Since then I've been calling Telkom regularly to try and solve the problem. They show up at my home and they solve the problem only for the problem to resurface an hour later.

Eventually I wanted to upgrade to a 4mb line. Everything was set up and they upgraded the line and wham the static was at insane levels. Nothing at all could get it away until we went back to 384 where is was more manageable.

The problem persisted but was more barable since I could just call out to a toll free number to get the static away.

Last year the line was automatically upgraded to a 1mb line. The static still remains but at least the router isn't disconnecting(by this point we've gone through 3 or 4 routers already).

This year I'm in to Do Gaming League playing Black Ops and it is so frustrating because I get 150+ping and often my games doesnt sync so I get disconnected.

I dont know what is causing the static and I am so frustrated. Can anyone please help me?
I have theories that maybe the Telkom wiring in our house is too old or there is damage to a cable somewhere.

I've tried following the cables but they dissapear underneath our roof sheeting.

Is it possible to get the cables replaced? ANy idea of who can do it and what costs are involved? (That is if it is related to the cables)

Hey there,

1. check your POTS filter - swap one out if you can, otherwise they are about R60 from a Telkom Direct store.
2. A high noise ratio may be indicative of a partially exposed line, which may need to be greased if they can't cover it. For this, check weather conditions such as wind and arin. If it gets worse when the weather is a bit dodgy, it's probably an exposed line.
3. Check your distance from the exchange - resistence increases as the line gets longer, and will amplify any noise. Nothing much you can do about this, but at least you will know. This also gets worse as your line ages.

This.

What is this grease that you've mentioned?

Noise on your voice line is normally a bad connection (corrosion)
Just keep on reporting your voice line noisy not much else you can do.

As per my previous posts... the "static" you hear is NOT USUALLY a bad connection. I have been right about this 99% so far. The noise is the result of a malconfigured MSAM in the exchange. In my specific case the only way around it was to get a new line installed. I did this twice, third time they put me on a different part of the exchange and the problem never came back!

I am still battling with the same issue at my parents house. I have fought so much with Telkom they have actually replaced ALL the wiring from their house to the exchange- it crackles on the MDF in the exchange!!!!!!!! When this was pointed out to them, then the light bulb went on and they then conceded I am right, the DSLAM/MSAM has issues!

First off voice and ADSL work on different frequency's.
So the noise on a voice line has nothing to do with the DSLAM .
Noise on a voice line can also be caused by contact with earth or another line but that should show up when they test the line, a bad connection will not show on a test.

Hi There,
I am with FNfal on this one.
If there is static on the line then keep placing a voice call until it is sorted out. I have static on my line ocassionaly and I live in an old area with old poles and connections. I think it is rain related as it is usually only a summer phenomena. I do not get any degradation though in the data.
I know that sounds like I am contradicting my opening sentence. If you have static then Telkom generally will try and get the voice quality back to perfect and that may result in them replacing a cable that is the root cause of all you problems.
Get the static off the line and if it still is poor connection (post your stats so we can look at tem anyway) then get on to the DSLAM being the potential problem
