Hi,

I wish to make contact with the user ProAsm about information in an archived posting www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/archive/index.php/t-12921.html

I have read the information with interest and would like further details about the Antenna used.

I live on the edge of a (what I believe is a 3G) coverage zone operated by a company in New Zealand call Whoosh. Whoosh utilise the desktop RF modems manufactured by IPWireless in the US (www.ipwireless.com). I can receive a very good almost strength signal but the signal quality is low and I believe that the modem does not have enough power to transmit over the distance required with the external omni directional antenna. I am interested in the directional antenna mentioned on the archived posting.

Can you please help.

Many thanks.

The Sentech MyWireless service in South Africa is also based on IPWireless equipment. Even though the equipment is capable of something like a 29km radius range, it also has the capability to limit the coverage radius. In SA I think this is set to 5.7km. You will need to contact Woosh to find out what they have has set this to, and you will need to determine your exact distance from the nearest tower. For this reason you may not be able to connect to the network, even with an external directional antenna.

Hi SweenyNZ - I have emailed you.

Just as a matter of interest the Desktop Modems have a transmit range of 15 km which also depends on the antenna receiving system Woosh uses on their towers although I think they are similar to those used here.
The next generation of modems will actually have their powers reduced to save on battery power :)
