Please help me with IS newsgroup problem

hey all I am using News File Grabber to access IS news groups, i find that i cant update any of the groups individually and when it does download some it freezes. Then once i have a little of the entire group and try to download a file i find that it runs at between 6-13kb i know this is not normal. Please advise me on what do to, the errors i get when trying to update groups are the following:

Server news.is.co.za
Job: Download Newsgroups from news.is.co.za
Request: Download Newsgroups
*** Socket Error # 10060
Connection timed out.

Its a little better with updating lists but the speed is 3kb-16kb or so please advise.
 
@ HF_GP - man that one is flying here 54kB/s - what is the difference between that and news.is.co.za?? Previously got around 34kB on news.is
 
isn't the slow speeds just because of all the problems IS is having at the moment? during the day mine also only ran at bout 10KB/s from news.is.co.za, but now its going at a solid 53KB/s

lol no idea but for some reason nntp seems to be alot more stable
 
There is a problem on the IS news server, and usually only during office hours. They are busy installing a second server, but that will only be done in april (says they but we are still waiting for the extra sat)
 
Do not update news groups - rather get Newzbin and use a NZB service such as newzbin.com. Saves a lot of effort and eases downloads.

I have used the above pair very successfully for a few months now, and will NEVER go back to the schlep of headers etc.

Of course, this is mostly for binaries. If you want to grab alt.php etc, then you download the headers for that group.
 
I download headers for a couple of groups, but i download them ona daily basis, so its not that many. But mostly I use newsleecher's supersearch function. Subscribed for a year with them, and me likes. Best time for the newsgroups is from 10 in the evenings onwards, especially downloading 70mb files for which the poster decided not to rar them or add par files
