What Media Player is the best to get?

I need to have a hard drive in and play direct to the Tv.

Its for my mom.I use my Samsung TV or Ps3 to run my video's

Budget we looking at around R2k

Roku 3. I've had 2 Apple Tv's and will never go back.

You can attach an external HDD via USB. You can also run things like Plex so its easy to use for the old folks.

I have a Roku 3 and what you must understand is that it's purpose is to be an internet streamer and not a media player. Sure, once you throw Plex in everything changes but that requires a pc being constantly on as the Plex server and the OP seems to be talking about plugging a hdd in which is where the Roku 3 doesn't excel. For flexibility and purely based on a media player requirement I would go for an MX3 or M8 Android media player from www.avsupply.co.za That said the Roku 3 is an awesome device.

Roku has USB support so it can definitely do what he asked and is by far a better all rounder than the other devices. Additionally the original poster should move on up in to the 21st century and stop streaming media like a cave man :D

Android player, XBMC and ext HDD, even my wife knows how to work it.
boots right into XBMC menu, small remote the size of apple tv's remote.

An Android media player like the ATV520e,a Roku or for the less technically inclined A WD Play or AC Ryan Playon (the latter 2 can take internal drives, the former 2 USB only)
