Hi everyone, new here.so please bear with me.

Currently have a Telkom ADSL router set-up in my office through which I connect with my notebook, running Win7 & Outlook. Outlooks' settings for my ******@telkomsa.net email account are as follows:

Incoming mail:
Server - pop3.telkomsa.net
Port - 110

Outgoing mail:
Server - smpt.dsl.telkomsa.net
Port - 25

These settings, when used in office on the laptop through the Telkom ADSL connection, work just fine, allowing me to Receive & Send messages with no problems whatsoever. Problem comes in when I try to connect to sync this mail account when out of office using the laptop, for which I have recently bought a HSPA 3G USB Modem (Vodacom). For some unknown reason, this mobile broadband connection allows me to successfully RECEIVE incoming mails, BUT NOT SEND them. (can't remember the specific error, something about error 554 and a relay issue, whatever that means - sorry for not being more specific, don't have the laptop with me now). Interestingly, the above settings work perfectly through my Wireless connection at home (iBurst), sending & receiving with no problems at all. At first I thought it might me Vodacom itself, so I tried the USB Modem with an MTN sim - same problem.

Guess one could say I'm pretty fed-up at this point. Worst part it, I'm trying to solve this problem on a deadline as I'll be out on business travel from Monday Dec 5, and not being able to send mails via the USB Modem I bought is a BIG ISSUE.

Sorry for the long post - I'm not a techie and thus limited in knowledge. Hoping somebody will be able to help me solve this issue before Monday.

Kind Regards.

Thanks for the quick reply D3x!,

Sorry for asking but what is the vodacom smtp server address? Also, is THIS the only way? Isn't there like a single smtp server that would work with both Vodacom as well as iBurst & Telkom ADSL? Thanks anyway.

think it is this: smtp.vodamail.co.za or smtp.vodacom.co.za

there apparently is another way by making your outgoing authenticate that could work but i am not 100% sure

Using an authenticated smtp like gmail or a private domain or finding out from telkom if they have the ability to authenticate on their smtp using your account details is your best bets in this instance

You could try the following: in Outlook's account settings, look for the 'More settings...' tab and click on it. In the next dialogue box, click on the 'Outgoing Server' tab, and then enable (tick the box) 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication', and select 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server'. The exact procedure varies according to which version of Outlook you're using, but this may put you on the right track.

I agree with PsyWulf.
If you have a gmail account add it to your mail accounts in outlook.
Use the gmail smtp server as your default outgoing server for all accounts (smtp.gmail.com), check SSL & use port 557.
If you dont have a gmail account, create one & try the gmail server settings.
All your mail should be able to be sent via gmail's smtp server.

Your incoming mail servers for your various email addresses will remain as is, ie. pop.telkom / pop.webmail etc, no matter what ISP you are using at any particular time.
However, the outgoing mail server often has to be that of the internet service provider you may be connected to at the time of sending mail. For example your outgoing mail server may be smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net, & at home while connected to telkom adsl all your mail is sent & received without problem, but when you leave home & may connected to MWEB or Neotel for example, you are able to receive mail, but you will be unable to send - resulting in a smtp error message.

As per this thread you might be able to try using smtp.uls.co.za as the outgoing,it resolves to the right smtp dependant on which network you're on for the popular networks

this doesnt work for me unfortunately. When trying to send telkomsa emails from any cellular network I get an error to say castor.telkomsa.net is not trusted. Really? speaking or emailing telkomsa support is no use as the problem is not on their script!
This is a common problem and I have tried all sorts of workarounds like diverting via gmail, but them mail shows as sent from gmail and not telkomsa.net.
I have an iphone and it used to work but not any longer.
Any help appreciated

Since my last post the uls dns entry has stopped being supported
For any clients who make use of multiple connection providers,i've started switching them to Mailjet (https://www.mailjet.com/feature/smtp-relay/)
The Free account limits are pretty decent
You get a SMTP relay with username and password to use for all your devices
