As soon as I connect my desktop, Windows XP, to my mega 105WR modem it starts uploading data at a tremendious rate allthough no applications are open.

I suspect it might be a virus or spyware. Any ideas regarding establishing the cause for the uploads or how I can stop it. What is thebest anti spyware to use?

Thanks in adance..

If you don't have protection, stay off the underground and p0rn sites... :D
And install some form of e-mail checker like Mailwasher to filter out unwanted/spam e-mails - by far the biggest source of infection.
Another option is to move to Linux - check how all the 'linofreaks' are boasting about being safe...

Check your processes for any malicious process that might be running. Also make sure that it isn't any updates running in the background of a certain program (or Windows). Also check your AntiVirus and Firewall settings. Might be a virus as well...

Spambot sending out its spam.

Best you can do is to run spybot SD, ad-aware, the usual antivirus applications and so on to try and flush the culprit out.

Failing to do so, backup your data and format/install windows from scratch.

Thanks for some of the help. For info I DO NOT vissit porn sites.

Thanks to all with usefull advice. It is commendable that there are members who go out of there way to help and advise other members.

Lord Fubar and DJStyles obviously have nothing to contribute except to insult other members in this forum. To reiterate I do not visit porn sites.

Thanks cyberarmy for asking. I've scanned my computer with AVG, then downloaded and scanned with spybot and Spyware Doctor. Nothing was found and I then format and re install everything. Now OK

Once again thanks

I bet you that Adobe's software was busy downloading updates without your consent.
Adobe is used mainly to read PDF files, and it installs a self-updater that does not require your consent before downloading it's updates, and it downloads them in sequence one after the other.

It's called humour (a joke), without it this place will be a boring.

Not to worry, if you don't visit porn sites I will share some of mine with you :D
