Please help with connecting to the internet via ethernet please!!!

Hi there guys I am fixing up an old MAC PowerPc G4......I have an Ethernet card in but i want to connect via the internal, but when I do so I come out by the network diagnostics which gives me the options then I take connecting through a local LAN connecting...then I have to type in the Router IP and the IP of mac and the IP of subnet mask but it didn't work please help me?

I will need more info. Is there an Ethernet card and the internal on board port? What is the subnet etc? Or is it dynamic?
 
255.255.255.0 is the sunbnet.....there is a onboard one and a ethernet card.....something is removed in the fornt of the box when you open it not sure if that is the wifi....
 
Those G4s never shipped with WiFi. Sorry, I should've asked subnet / router / ip and not subnet etc.

You need to give that thing the correct network config for whichever port is in use. You should see terms like Ethernet and Ethernet (2) in the network preferences. Try both - using static IP.

Sys Prefs:Network:
*Click Ethernet to select it
*Click Advanced
*Click TCP/IP tab
*Configure: Manually
*Enter Sub/Router/IP
*Click DNS
*Enter a server - one you know works (8.8.8.8)

Click ok and Apply.

If this does not work, try doing the same for the other ethernet port listed in SysPrefs. Failing these, why does it have a separate network card? Could be because on-board is dead?
 
I'm also thinking the onboard one may be dead or faulty. But maybe not.
Maybe to simplify things, try removing the card & connect a network cable between the mac (onboard ethernet) & a router (assuming you have one). Take a look at the ethernet connector on the mac & look for activity (ie the green / red flicking lights) & keep an eye on the router & see if there is activity there as well. If there is no activity, remove it (network preferences) & do the same test using the card. Assuming you now see some form of "network activity" going on & the on board ethernet removed let the mac attempt to automatically assign settings. If it fails to correctly assign settings try the static route -- as in previous posts.
Let us know how you progress.
If all the above still fails, dont be shy in calling a "genuis" at Digicape in Cape Town. Their tech support are not too concerned as to the age of the Mac or where it was purchased.
