Please help with WRT54G and pppoe

I've got a WRT54G with OpenWRT on it and I have iBurst. When I had the Linksys firmware on it I had no problem setting up pppoe so that all the PCs on my little home network could have internet access. However now that I've flashed it with OpenWRT I just cannot get my pppoe set up. This is what I found on the OpenWRT FAQ page about setting up pppoe:

This is done through Telnet

nvram set wan_ifname=ppp0
nvram set wan_proto=pppoe
nvram set ppp_mtu=1492 # The MTU of your ISP
nvram set pppoe_ifname=vlan1 # For WRT54GS only. This should be your wan port.
nvram set ppp_username=your_isp_login
nvram set ppp_passwd=your_isp_password
nvram commit


I've tried this a few times with a slight change here and there but nothing seems to work and none of my PCs will see the net through the WRT router.
If anybody knows how to sort this out please post a solution, I'm tearing my hair out with this

I don't want to put the Linksys firmware back on because I'm trying to set up a wireless link with a neighbour a block away from me and he reckons I need to have OpenWRT for it to work the way we want it to.

Make sure you have pppoecd installed.
You may have to manually start it on boot.

Ummm, is pppoecd part of the OpenWRT firmware or do I need to download it?
To manually start it on boot what do I need to do?

I'm no Linux expert so please be gentle

pppoecd isn't part of the standard install of OpenWRT. You'll have to find the package somewhere.

The OpenWRT website should be able to help you track the package.
I think the package installs a script that will start it when you boot.
