This is the situation :

My wife needs to start working from home. I've applied for a 384line from Telkom and will be installed (apparently) on the 16th of March.

My dilemma is :

She basically needs to send and receive emails and use SARS website and efiling etc.... pretty much 24/7.
I would like to be able to download torrents, even if it has to be on weekends only, but weeknights would be great to...

So who do i choose for my isp and what packages, it's just all to complicated!!!

Thank you for the help!!

Well if you're going to be doing a LOT of downloads during the evening and on weekends then you're best bet is axxess express uncapped.

You still get to use it during the day, although at 192kbps if you have reached your rolling threshhold. But to be honest, that 192kbps is quite good for surfing and small emails, I've experienced it myself.

Worth it if you're going to be downloading tons of stuff

Are talking about Axxess Express Uncapped @ R899? If you mean that one then won't it be kinda useless with a 384k line? I think that one is more for the 4mb line users.

I suggest either a 10 gig bundle from Afrihost (R290) or going with DigiChilli Uncapped Spicy package (R300). DigiChilli isn't the most relible at the moment but are improving. Another Option is waiting for SAINET's Uncapped account that goes live April 1st (if I'm not mistaken) it's R450 pm for data only and R499 pm for Data + ADSL line rental.

There is also Screamer and SAOL but both seem to be having problems so I think the above is your best bet for now. Later this year I believe there will be better deals. Good luck :)

Thanx for the replies guys. BUT stability is key. She can't be without a connection. I'd rather sacrifice my downloads for stable connection. Plus id like to spend less than R350p/m

you can pretty much forget torrents on that kind of budget. None of the 384k uncapped offerings are that cheap (and none of them are stable enough). And the kind of cap you are going to get on that budget is not enough to do torrents in any kind of serious way. You might get a Telkom that gives you local only access after your cap is out... but she's not going to like being capped either, she won't be able to use international.

So you might consider then getting her one account and yourself a Telkom account that includes local. You run hers during the day and yours at night (using bridge mode).
But then you got to find yourself an invite to a local torrent community, and they are pretty stingy about inviting people they don't know.

I'm thinking AXXESS pre-paid semi-shaped to start off with.... Reasons being that there's no contract and i can determine what her usage will be, and if semi-shaped will work for her. Stick around on that and maybe get the budget uncapped accounts as an extra later on or see what the future holds in store...

Also AXXESS seems to be a very stable ISP...

Thnx for the replies anyway...

For less than R350pm you won't be able to get any form of uncapped ADSL. Since you're already paying R152pm for line rental, you would only be able to afford a few GB of cap (less than 10GB) from like Afrihost.
I haven't had any stability issues with SAINET, except for the fact that they didn't allow 4Mbps ADSL users using their 384kbps uncapped accounts before 1 April 2010. Just note that if you're going to be using their services, that they'll place you in a slower pool if you are going to be using excessive bandwidth.

I'm not sure how much cap your wife will be using, but it might be worth it getting like 10 - 30GB of local only cap from OpenWeb or WebAfrica (ranging from R70 - R131) if she's going to be using lots of local cap.

Btw, that R350pm you were talking about: does that include line rental or not? If its excluding line rental, then it might be worth while going for the SAINET 384kbps uncapped account (for R499) that includes line rental.

Ja, that sounds wise... start off slow and see where you can go from there.

You should consider a bundled account that gives you 3G data ontop of the ADSL for redundancy purposes, then it's just a matter of her using her cellphone or modem when the Telkom line goes down.

Have a look at Cybersmart OnePrice Accounts & the Nightrider addon for your downloads..

Cybersmart

Rooi_Willie get Cybersmart 384k one price and move your line to them, then get the night rider and weekender option 1 service, Total cost of R315 including line rental and VAT < maybe less since you won't be getting the grow for life like I have so - R16

Thanx for all the replies guys!

Will check out all the options you mentioned.

Currently got the 1Gbint/10Glocal from openweb!

Mate if you going to use 1GB/int and 10GB/local why not use do broadband 1 from Telkom, R 199 (152+47) Meaning your data is only R 47 which is cheaper than openweb's R 89, just a suggestion
