Hi guys

I just need some help or advise.

We recently installed a Telkom ADSL line (4mbps).

Since we got the line my top download speeds are 50kbps. Nothing more.

Telkom sent someone who did a speed test, which showed a download speed of 0.91 mbps. They said it is normal as we are located far from a base station.

I dont know how speedtest.net gets 0.91 mbps. No matter where I download, I dont get more than 50kbs.

Can someone tell me why this is the case?

Your line quality must be ****ty. If you want my advice, I'd downgrade to 512k ADSL (since that is what you're effectively getting) and save a couple of hundred bucks.

Did you ask the telkom guy how far you are from the exchange ??
he did not mention if they are going to install a MSAN in your area to help with the distance problem in the future

same. 384k line gets 30kbps. I am also quite distant from an exchange (we stay in south broom), but here is some stuffs you can do:

1. ask them to reset the port (phone your ISP)
2. make sure it isn't a bad download (try downloads from other sources.)
3. Reset your modem/router and check up on the settings.
4. Ask them to test your wiring. faulty wiring is a major loss of speed (due to interference and signal loss n stuff)

5. use higher quality/shorter phone line cable to connect your router to the jack.

6. downgrade to 384K, lose 20KBPS and save an assload of cash.

this is only a suggestion. but If I was you, I would phone telkom and rant until i got disconnected or passed out.

Also, AFAIK, Telkom won't allow you to be 4mbps or higher if they know you're too far away from the exchange to support it. Look at line noise etc and post that, also request they move your line to a closer exchange.
