Hi Guys,

I have 2 silly questions.

I am looking to buy a fax machine with a printer and scanner as well as copier all in one.
Question is does a fax machine come with a number or do you register it to a landline number i'm completely lost. How do you start sending and receiving faxes.

Thanking you all in advance :p

hmmm....

I think it has it's own number since most businesses list their phone and fax numbers separately. Unless they don't want someone sending a fax while they're on the phone.

A fax machine can be attached to any land line .
So if you have a Telkom telephone just attache the fax to the land line and give out that number.
If no telephone number obviously you will need a telephone line.

When you buy a fax ,it does not come with a telephone number.

Ignore the guys, Kuxxy. No, it doesn't work with a landline. It only works on the telegram data protocol, so just plug the fax machine into your router's telegram port and it should work. If your router doesn't have a telegram port then call Telkom and ask them to activate your telegram portal on your router's exchange and ask them to send you a router with a telegram port. Quote the serial number of your fax machine to them so they know which one to link it to, and quoting this will also get you a free telegram port router if you don't already have one.

Good luck, and ignore the guys laughing at you. Not everyone was born before 2000. And welcome to the forums.

Let us know if you have any troubles...

^^still doesn't explain where it gets its number from. Or will it be the same number as the phone?

It also depends if you have switchboard or not. If you do the toy can just give it an extension number. If not, then you have 2 choices. Use your regular telephone line but you can't talk on the phone and fax simultaneously. Or get a second line used only for fax.

Personally, I have faxed 1 thing in the last 3 years using a traditional fax machine. Now I receive my faxes via email and send them via email too.

I most certainly have not :o unless email to fax counts.

It doesn't count, as the email provider then routes it through their own telegram port, so technically they're the ones sending the fax...

That concludes today's lesson in antiquated communications systems. Tune in next week when we'll be discussing the successor to the fax machine, Smoke Signals.

Ah yes. The backbone of the Neotel network...

Lol @DJ.

To the op. Plug it into an existing phone line. It will just use that lines number. It works on more or less the same concept as the old dialup modems, hence most of them being referred to a fax modems. Companies who use a separate fax number to their landline are doing so, so that when someone is using the fax, people can still make and receive phone calls.

It is not a telegram port... surely you are referring to the more modern telex ports?

If you use it with a Telkom line with ADSL, make sure there is a POTS filter between the fax machine and the wall socket (plug the fax into the PHONE socket)

Umm, DJ, you yourself have confessed in other thread so "not knowing much about technology" so allow one little correct - it's the telex port not the telegram.

Telkom will also supply you with special yellow spools that is used to create an analogue backup of the digital message.
