Iv recently moved into a new flat.. the phone lines arent activated, i want to get a 512k self install, so wats the procedure? do i need apply for a fone package first, and then for the adsl self install?

Having just been through this I went to the Blue Route shop (nearest to me) and did the ordering.

I told the guy there what I a phone line and 384 self-install. He advised that the best plan was that he would place the order for the phone line and once that was complete place the order for the ADSL. His reasoning being that if the orders were placed together and the ADSL order barfed for any reason, the phone installation would be delayed as well.

Also the first appoinrtment that the phone line could be 'installed' was about 5 weeks in the future. The guy in the shop said he would try and get that date improved - and called back the next day to say that the date had been moved to 1 week away.

Once the phone line had been installed the Telkom shop guy called back to say that the ADSL order had been placed. About a day later the ADSL became active on the line - did the self install verification stuff, called my ISP to get the new port opened - and I was away. Telkom called about two days later to say that the ADSL ready for me to install...

About 8 days from order to completion. I was pleasantly surprised.

This is the fourth time I've done this over the past two years - and the first time took 3 months (including Telkom cancelling the order on my behalf once...), so this was a pleasant surprise - The price is a constant reminder that all is not yet right in the zoo, but progress is being made.

My experience is that some of the Telkom shop people really really know what is going on and how to get stuff done in Telkom land. There is some work that needs done on the Telkom processes/systems. The ordering process was not simple and required much typing and clicking on systems, getting exchange numbers, manually adding account information etc etc. Personally this was not a problem I could see progress being made, but ordering a new phone line and ADSL should be a few click, absolutely standard order that takes no time at all to capture?

Any best of luck! and keep smiling :)

It's been 3 days now since I ordered the ADSL, still waiting for that call to tell me I can collect my modem. The line installation only took 2 days in my case, though. That was also a very pleasant surprise.
