I have been searching through the local retailer sites for a fibre modem router without luck. My main need is for one with decent throughput and ac wireless. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I tried some of the links in previous posts here but it seems like those products have been discontinued.

5GHZ 802.11ac not supported?

It's supports it

But you can use any Wireless router like a TP-Link Archer C7 etc. Pretty sure you don't need a SFP port (check with ISP), you only need a ethernet WAN port. And if you are not tech-savvy rather not go Mikrotik

You don't need an SFP port, and I wouldn't recommend a Tik to someone looking for a "home router" to be honest. TPLink do some decent fair priced kit, Linksys used to be pretty good as well.

You need to get a seperate fibre modem and plug your wireless router of choice into it via wan port Ethernet.

I am getting the impression that I will need a separate fibre modem and router. Is there a local source for the modems, or can I use one of the modem-routers provided by the ISPs and line that into a decent router?

Yes.

The fibre ISP's insist on using their own modems, they do this so that they can log into it and check the line.

But you can use your own router, although they will usually supply a simple router. Usually too basic to be usable.

What's a "fibre ISP"?

So, have we clarified, does the OP want something to plug the fibre into, or a router to connect to an ISP service?

This will be as an alternative to the standard router that is provided by Telkom etc. when they do a fibre installation.

Does anyone use an apple airport extreme with their fibre connection? If so, everything working fine?
