Hi

I am looking for a web developer that can implement a marketplace type website similar to Freelancer.com that is required by an engineering and design company in the UK.

We are not requiring a re implementation of freelance.com. We are looking to set up a web site where engineering clients can post project requirements or request for proposals as well as for suppliers / contractors to be able to register and upload their skill sets & services. Freelancer.com is simply a reference website of what we are trying to do.

South African developers preferred but not required.
Must be competent in English.

I would be grateful for any recommendations for any web development shops and developers are welcome to send me a private message.

Ideally we would like to be be able to see similar existing work or a demo mock up of a functioning marketplace website.

Many thanks

No ways I am going to do a scoping and the effort to compile a detailed proposal with demo mockup, if your budget and my thumbsuck based on experience and perceived complexity doesn't have the same number of zeroes...

This sounds like a six figure site. Is that in the budget before I send you a PM? :D

Yeah, sorry to say, but if you don't have a budget, you won't have a developer.

You need to have a business plan in place, and that includes your costs. If you haven't done that legwork upfront, you're going to fail.

Honestly, this is easily a R2M plus project, you'll need at least one senior dev, plus two mid-junior devs and a PM plus a tester.
5 person team minimum.

I would estimate with that around 6-9 months full time of work.

Senior dev rate of R65k P/M
2 x Mid Range R40k P/M each
Tester R35k P/M
Project Manager / BA R50k P/M
Total around R230k P/M for salaries. R2M for 9 months of work.

This isn't including Mobile Apps.

That is very much my line of thought too. Although I would add some effort from a proper cloud architect if this is going to be deployed to some cloud platform. Senior dev not necessarily skilled in the cloud nuances

Yeah, but they should be by now, if not, they need to catchup fast.
Lots of companies (Azure, AWS, Oracle) offer training as well as free accounts you can test stuff on.

Thanks for the replies. I have a reply of interest from a developer. We’re underway

Hi @Twigg. I'm a full stack mobile + web developer with experience in other fields such as embedded and desktop development. I've got other members on this forum that can vouch for me.

I pride myself in finding cost-effective solutions without compromising on quality. I do this by staying up to date with the latest trends to accelerate development so that I don't have to reinvent the wheel unless necessary.

The majority of my experience is freelance backend API and web/mobile frontend development and I've previously worked in California for a tech startup.

If necessary, I do have the resources to bring more people onboard and manage the entire project.

I plan on going to the UK to visit family of mine as soon as the borders open up again.

These are also CTC rates, not the rates you will pay to have another company build this for you

I have seen many a prospective person/company looking for x/y/z platform approach me to do work for them. Software development requires an initiate understanding of its nature BEFORE you start.

The above line is the killer. If you're asking for quotes in the way that you are, one of the following will happen to you:

1. You will burn through whatever money you have and never reach a point where you launch.
2. According to you, the developer will not be delivering fast enough. This will perpetuate somewhat and will result in a fight in which the developer will leave and your product won't get launched or won't get the features it needed.
3. After doing a small bit of work you will extrapolate, realize what the entire product will cost and will abandon its development.
4. You never actually start the project because the developers, while initially seeming interested, don't ever seem to begin working.
5. You launch a smaller subset of the product that you had hoped, and then it doesn't generate any interest.

Please return to this thread 6 months into the future and tell me which one it is.

How do I know one of these will happen?

The people who know how to manage and develop software products that sell don't start with "we want to build xyz and we wan't a developer to do it". They don't ask for quotes, because that's silly given the context of what you're trying to do.

While the guesses above are probably more realistic than what you have in mind, they are probably way off what the actual total will be.

I'm going to take a guess and say that :

1. You have never managed a software project before
2. You have never built a software business before
3. You have never hired a full time developer before

Please let me know if any of these are right.

To combat this impending doom, please go and work in a software business for 3 months before you start this. Just pick one and go help out for free if necessary. Talk to people who run the show. Talk to the devs. Talk to the marketing people. Ask them about what makes a software business tick. You will not post what you did once you've done this.

This process actually begins with 3 months or so of working doing marketing research. Speaking to prospective customers. Refining what the product should do. Making mockups. You don't seem to have done this research given your vague explanation of what the product is supposed to do.

I was serious when I suggested Freelancer.com. I have used the platform myself as well (when I did cheap labor) and there are very talented people on there. Might be good to at least get going while figuring out what you want to achieve. Just remember you get what you pay for and you might have to completely redo it later.

The other option is to do it right from the start, will probably cost you 150K and upwards for a basic site, assuming you know what you want.

Spot on! Excellent advice. You invested more in this venture than I have just by typing that out...

I once had a random lady doctor approach me to develop ‘uber for gardeners and domestics’. I told her it will cost the same as a car. Open-ended and all that. She told me that ‘no its only supposed to work in <small dorpie>. I said goodbye.

R150K will buy you the storyboard and maybe wireframe mock-ups

Naw boys, this was a smash and grab post, someone just wanted some cheap labour, you know cause we're from South Africa, and the dumb c##nts over there can speak English. Paying crumbs and expecting fishes and loaves. That's why OP scoffed at RedViking, and retromod is on the money.

Whomever took on this project, get a deposit up front, and track EVERTYTHING you do, keep detailed logs of when you take a sh+t, cause this is going to get ugly
