Please report D/L speed on 4096 line

Speedtests mean nothing. My 4Mbps line is frequently reported as such or close to as dammit.

However when I download things like Windows drivers for the nVidia GeForce 7 Series on a single thread it chugs along at steady 512kbps. 8 threads will get it downloading at the full line spped. Why I don't know.

Milomak - HTTP servers are multithreaded, cause they have to handle mutiple visitors simultaneously.

It would makse sense to allocate a % of bandwidth to those threads to fairly distribute available BW between users.

Therefore adding multiple threads to your %FILEZ% / Downloads boosts your throughput. :)

Maybe what I am saying is not clear. More than 90% of downloads from international sites will max out at around 512kbps if I download using one thread. Some will go full speed. Most do not. I would think that i would not need to multithread on almost all downloads.

And more so it's the consistency of each thread being limited to 512kbps, which leads me tho think it's Telkom's doing and not the site I am downloading from.
 
If telkom was shaping your international HTTP traffic believe me you would be getting 512 max whether using 1 thread or 10.

It wouldnt make sense for a http daemon to allocate all resources to 1 user - this would mean any subsequent users would get a trickle because there was some badass user connected with a fibre [or woteva]

There is no way besides human input for a server to verify it's exact upstream width either - so to make things fair it just limits per thread.
While browsing normally - your client usually makes multiple connections to the server so u feel the full benefits. But as soon as a dld starts things stagnate.

Sporadic WOW explanation:
The server has been explicitly configed not to shape, and/or has Uber connectivity.

Or the file you are getting is coming from a dedicated content delivery network eg. Akamai, Cachefly etc...
These are serious international delivery networks that provide the likes of Microsoft (win update) with bandwidth. (there are no restrictions here)

I get over 3,276,800bps from international torrents.
 
plenty - the point i was making is that the way lines behaves wrt to international and local sites is different. A single thread download from a local site will most likely be around 420kB/s. Whereas an international one will be around 60kB/s.

The transparent PROXY has these limitations in place, and see IS also Proxy's there Business Uncapped ADSL users.

Sorry milomak, untill we have spaghetti submarine cables along our coastline - it's the way it's got to be

How else is telkom going to make a 3Gig cap - look like it's kinda lasts...
Imagine if you were 450+ regardless ;)
 
How quickly I use my cap should not be their business. In fact they should welcome it as it might mean I buy additional cap.
