Eskom begs people to stop building under high-voltage power lines

Eskom has appealed to South African residents to stop erecting houses and other buildings under its high-voltage power lines.

The power utility said it had observed an increase in such structures built within servitudes — the land below and adjacent to power lines.

And back in civilisation when Eskom actually needs to construct a power line that even comes remotely close to a civilised area they need people to remove themselves because something as simple as a playground could have massive residual electrical charges where touching a raw bolt could electrocute you.

There is a big chunk of houses in Athlone right under a 66kV set of cables. There are 4 sets of 2 cables and now and then you can see them glowing in the dark

Been like this since the 1960's.

We have a Spar in our area that's built underneath some massive pylon lines.

Then a year or so ago one of the pylon cables close to it in my area broke... set the whole veld on fire and rained down ash for a few minutes, luckily it dropped on a pathway that wasn't being used at the time... probably the biggest explosion I've ever seen.

I haven't been back to that Spar yet.

Would Eksedom not have to find them alternative accommodation? Anyway, I am surprised they haven't swing a line over the cables to either get free power or steal them; maybe they have.
