I've tried a new intro point for GPS location (spoiler) on my website, and built in some helpful pointers for new users.

I'll really appreciate if you can try this out and share your thoughts with me. I'll also answer questions you'll no doubt have lol.

Without any more introduction, I'm curious whether new (and returning) users will A) figure out what to do; B) know what they're seeing; C) figure out what they CAN do

Not mobile friendly, well not entirely..?

Can't scroll down, page keeps defaulting back up to the header banner after leaving the scroll..

What are you trying to scroll down to? There's nothing lower down precisely to keep it mobile friendly :D I kinda forced myself to get it to all fit on one screen or else split it across panels.

Also can you share which page you are seeing that behaviour on? I can't replicate it at all lol, scrolling works fine for me.

Sent see the coordinates, so technically everything doesn't fit on the page:

Just allow me to scroll.. I like seeing footers...

To add, the home page allows me to scroll down and stay there, it's just the locate me page with this behaviour..

The header changes color when you scroll - makes it a bit confusing, like you're not sure if the page is broken & not loading something you're meant to be seeing.

You can scroll though! Rofl, I have no issues with that. Which browser is preventing you from scrolling down? I'm not seeing it in Chrome or Edge.

That's default WordPress behaviour on that theme, it makes the header less distracting after you don't need it because you're scrolling away from it.

1.) Maybe don't tell people they weren't paying attention.
2.) Why not provide links to the top 3 or whatever browsers for how to re-enable that setting.

You kind of give this cheeky jab but then do nothing to help them correct the mistake.

A blinking header is less distracting?

Yes, I can scroll but it doesn't stay at the position I scrolled to, bounces back to the top.. chrome on Android mobile.. it's only the locate me page, home page works fine.. can scroll to a position and it stays there..

If you look at my screen shot, o can't see the coordinates so I have to scroll down to see it.. bit it doesn't stay there long enough for me to see or copy it.. so then what's the point of having the coordinates displayed there..

*grins* The opening screen specifically cues you to expect a prompt to allow location. I added that to minimise the chances of people rejecting it. And anyone who still rejects it, rather than showing them a broken site I at least detect the rejection and tell them how to fix it and give them the alternative of using a different browser. I did contemplate adding links to guides for the different browsers ... if you think that'd be helpful I'll stick that in there.

Safer to assume people will do the very opposite of what you tell them. Just make it easy as chips for them to do it again. Don't suppose there's any way to force the location permission popup again from your end?

Nah that's the thing, you're not meant to see the coordinates. My site is about the mapcode you can share. The mapcode is the only co-ordinate you need. I figured out what you're seeing ... I keep the browser centred on the mapcode, because that's the key information, so even if you scroll away by accident, the browser will bring it back into focus. Try the "share" button and share it to WhatsApp or email. Click that link. See if it makes more sense then ;)

Sadly no, I looked into that. Once a user declines it, the browser remembers the preference and you can't trigger the request again from the site's side. You'd just keep coming back to that message.

How about just adding a button that will request the user to allow location again and corresponding wording to that effect:

You denied location, we need this to make this work, click the allow button below to allow your location blah blah blah, you get the gist..

Right, then in that case then don't add the coordinates at the bottom of the screen.. curious people are going to see just coordinates and a colon and will want to scroll down to see what's displayed there and then likely run into the issue I am..

Yeah good point, I might need to delete them. They're not needed there. I was just trying to intuitively show that the mapcode changes as the GPS coordinates update, so people can link the two in their mind. Because they are the same. Just one is much shorter.

Browsers don't allow that behaviour sadly. I think they do it to prevent websites spamming permission requests. Once you click "block", the site is added to the "blocked permissions" list in the user's browser and there's no way for the site to re-trigger the permissions request. Currently the only way is for the user to manually go into their "site settings" of their browser and remove the website from their block list. That's why I created the opening page, just to cue users on what to expect.

Don't suppose you have a way to silently check if location is already allowed or not..? If you do, I would suggest:

Check location is allowed or not on initial site load.. if allowed, go straight to locate me button page with no explanation of the location permissions.. if not allowed, spawn a pop up in the users face, explaining they need to allow location permissions..

You'll see if you go back, you don't get prompted for permissions. You can experience it again in Incognito mode, which doesn't remember your location preferences. If you haven't yet granted permissions access, you're taken to a new screen which lies under the permissions prompt and reminds you to click on Allow. If you've already allowed permission, you don't see that screen. I think there is a way to do a preliminary check before starting navigation, meaning I can skip the splash screen at the start for returning users, so I'll investigate that further :)
