A suspected house robber died in Plettenberg Bay during a confrontation with police over the weekend.

Western Cape police spokeswoman Captain Bernadine Steyn said on Monday it was unclear whether police shot and killed him, or whether he committed suicide.

The man died from a gunshot wound to the head shortly after he robbed a 70-year-old woman's house on Saturday night. He also tried to rob an abandoned house next door.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident [are] still unclear and being investigated, including the possibility that the suspect fatally wounded himself," Steyn said.

A man forced his way into the woman's house on Saturday and demanded she hand over her valuables.

"The suspect, who had a knife, demanded cash and a firearm from the victim, after which he ransacked the house. He also took the safe that was in one of the bedrooms out of the wall and forced it opened with an iron pole," said Steyn.

He took a 7.65mm pistol from the safe, as well as household items including a laptop, a cellular phone, sunglasses, and clothes, and went to an empty house next door.

A security company and police were called and confronted the man at the empty house.

"The suspect allegedly fired shots at them [and they] returned fire," said Steyn.

The man died on the scene. An inquest docket was opened.

How would this chop know that this 70-year old woman -- a demographic that I would wager isn't big on weapons -- has a gun in her safe? Or was he just dipping into the lucky packet hoping? To me, it seems like he knew she had a gun on the property, which, if true, most likely means a little blue birdy told him.

So what? She could have told someone she had a M1 Abrahams tank, AH-64 Apache Gunship or Gatling gun in the safe for all I care. Does not mean he's entitled to it.

The police probably only shot him because he wouldn't give them some of the loot.

What are you babbling about? Would you prefer I drew you a picture?

I don't think anyone suggested he was entitled to it, i think his point was someone on the inside might have tipped the robber off about a gun in the safe.

You don't care fair enough.

Terrible safe if he could open it so easily. He did seem determined to get into the safe, must have known about the gun or thought safe = lotsa money.

From the PBCPA's Facebook Page:

Around 13H00 a perpetrator broke into a house in Julia Avenue and held a matured lady hostage for 4 hours, whilst he ransacked her house and stole a firearm. After he left the lady alerted ADT who requested the PBCPA members assistance. Otto took control over the PBCPA members and posted them in various directions to try and capture suspect. Henry of Garden Route Communication, Marius of Smhart Security and Waldo of PLETT Security entered a vacant house nearby, through a window and found suspect inside. Suspect confronted them with a weapon and they used pepper spray on the suspect, which gave them time to exit the house. The PBCPA members surrounded the house to prevent suspect to escape where he tried to hide under the house till SAPS arrived. Suspect was fatally wounded in a cross fire between SAPS and suspect.

Well done to everyone who assisted in apprehending this criminal. Hats off to SAPS who was quick on the scene and took control.

Yours in Safety

Yeah, I reckon he knew about the gun and the safe. Really makes you wonder about having to bring these guys in to inspect your gun safe when you apply for a firearm license.

Or shucks, he took a flier, as so many criminals do, put a knife to the throat of the victim and said, where's the dough and the weapons? You think???

Sheez man

Umm... besides the female septuagenarian demographic clearly spelled out in the first sentence, sirrah?

Just wanted to be clear, and I agree with you on the 'fact' that safe inspections are serious problem as it puts a bulls eye on your head.
