Hi all,

I currently have two Rokus where the Plex app is free, but the lack of local support for Roku is annoying. IE: Showmax, DSTV, etc.

I think the Plex app on android is paid for, and I would like to know if anybody is running Plex on an Android Media Player and how they are finding it.

Thanks all,

mister

A quick Google found this:

Free Functionality
The following functionality is available without unlocking the Plex for Android app:

  • Unlimited casting/flinging of photos and videos from the Camera Roll on your phone or tablet to other Plex apps that support Plex Companion

  • Unlimited casting/flinging of any media on your Plex Media Server to other Plex apps that support Plex Companion

  • Remote control your big screen Plex apps that support Plex Companion

  • Browse libraries from your own or shared Plex Media Servers
LIMITATIONS: When playing or viewing media from your Plex Media Server on the device:

  • Video is limited to one minute of playback

  • Music is limited to one minute of playback

  • Photos will have a watermark added

I was using Plex on my android phone for a while until I used Lucky Patcher to 'patch' it and unlock the limitations.

Yes I know the app needs to be paid for. I was asking how people are finding it on Android Media Players. Comments from ex Roku users would be great, but any comments from android only peeps would be appreciated too.

Haven't used it on Android, but from their recent emails it seems as if they now have a universal interface across all devices, so you shouldn't see anything different from your roku. I actually had to buy the app for the roku before it became free, wonder why android is the only one you have to pay for? Would be nice to be able to watch from my phone as well, will probably buy the android app as well at some stage.

Android app is like R60 or something. Bought it- ironically don't use it.
What's nifty is the ability to stream over the net (if you have enough data on both the server network and your mobile device and high enough upload speeds- like LTE or so).

Performance of Plex on Android depends on the hardware. If you have a high perforamance device, streaming FULL HD high bitrate streams shouldn't be a problem. I had a MINIX NEO X8-H Plus and it could handle ANYTHING! But there are android devices that struggle with high bitrate Full HD content.

My recommendation to anyone that wants to get an android box for streaming is to get a Raspberry PI :D
