Plex remote streaming now requires Plex Pass

It makes sense. I would imagine they spend a lot of money on servers to host these relays.

Nice to see them scrapping the mobile stream unlock fee also.

Looks like it is remote streaming and not relays. Damn okay. I do have my Plex Pass Lifetime I got a while back at discount so not affected but damn that is one way to generate revenue and hate at the same time.

Wait is this remote or relay. Now I'm confused.

Just get the lifetime version. I did in 2014 and it paid for itself many times already. I've moved on to Stremio and Stremio alternatives anyway.

Used to think the best thing I did was to move Plex off my Synology NAS onto an old Mac and cancel my pass.

Now I'm doubly sure.

Tf, more than doubling lifetime:

The good news is that you can still purchase a Lifetime Plex Pass subscription at the current price of $119.99 USD* before the increase goes into effect on April 29, 2025.

New USD prices as of April 29, 2025 will be:
Monthly: $6.99
Yearly: $69.99
Lifetime: $249.99

But watching on a mobile app will now be free via local network, so you'll only really need a Plex Pass if you want to watch remotely?

So Long, Mobile Unlock Fee

Our Android and iOS mobile apps previously required a one-time activation fee or Plex Pass to remove the one-minute playback limitation when streaming content from a Plex Media Server. As part of these changes, there will no longer be any such one-minute playback limitation. Playing content on a local network will be free in the new mobile apps. These changes will go into effect when the new mobile Plex experience exits the preview period and launches publicly.

Public release coming in early 2025)

I used Plex for nearly a decade, and the service is obvious starting point if you're setting up a local media library. While the free tier has an exhaustive feature-set in its own right, you'll need to use Plex Pass to unlock the best utility, including hardware-assisted transcoding, ability to download content on mobile devices, advanced controls, and skip intros — what I use the most.

Plex Pass costs $4.99 a month, $39.99 annually, and is available as a lifetime sub that'll set you back $119.99. These prices have been unchanged for the better part of a decade, but Plex is now starting to raise prices across the board. Starting April 29, the monthly plan will cost $6.99, yearly plan is going up to $69.99, and the lifetime option will cost $249.99.

well this sucks

i didn't/don't use it a lot

but it was helpful occassionally

Seems much of a muchness.

As long as the “server” owner has a Plex Pass everyone else can stream as they please and the apps now become free so it actually makes the lives of the few people I share to easier.

Started the migration to Jellyfin and it’s been more seamless than I thought.
it seems this jellyfin might be a thing

imagine never having had to play for plex

seems like it has serious buffer issues though

Its been performing well so far and with hardware transcoding it almost flawless. I DO sometimes get buffering when i seek forward or backward

I think by default Jellyfin comes with a lot more knobs and dials than Plex, where everything is mostly plug and play.

That being said one Jellyfin is tuned to your liking, it should be pretty solid.

I have plex pass so I can't test but did you guys try using nginx reverse proxy? This setup doesn't require the remote feature to even be enabled.

I am sure it should work.

I can stream remotely via my Tailscale node. As far as Plex is concerned it's streaming from the Plex container to another container (Tailscale LXC) so it's none the wiser :)

EDIT: I don't have Plex Pass or a Plex subscription

What is that?
Has anyone managed to get Jellyfin remote viewing working, I'm struggling but I am using a mobile router/connection with no fixed IP so I'm not sure it is even possible.
