New Plex feature sharing people's scandalous viewing habits with friends and family

Plex's new "Discover Together" feature has caused concern among users who don't want their friends and family to see some of the less savoury content they are viewing.

404media reports that the media server app's feature has riled up several users on Reddit, the Plex Forums, and the comment section of the blog post announcing the feature.

Every app wants to be some form of social media nowadays. Stick to doing what you're good at doing and stop pissing off your user base for literally no reason at all.

That discover together feature is weird. Out of the blue I get mails about what my friends are watching. It's nothing dodge, but... why? Just more spam.

This is what happens when MBAs run wild in companies, just lots of useless features get added that no one wanted.

Plex then: We can't see and don't care what you have on your server.

Plex now: Here's a list of everything you and all of your friends watched this week.

I kinda like the feature
Granted i don't have anything on my plex i'd want to hide

Except a certain 1992 space epic, it'll be hard to explain that one to new users

There is a concise response on the Plex forum which helps some of the confusion and misinformation in certain news articles: https://forums.plex.tv/t/discover-together-public-release/857227/3

Who uses Plex? It used to be good until it tried to be something other than a media platform. I use Emby personally - thinking about dumping that as well and moving to Jellyfin as it's completely free and now plays Dolby Vision and Atmos...

I'm using Emby as well, haven't looked at Jellyfin in a long time. Maybe it's time to compare the 2 again...
