Hi

I have a 2Mb uncapped with Mweb. Lately I'm experiencing horrible speeds in the evenings - speed test shows that its at 0.47Mbps - I can't even play a Youtube video!

I used to get 1.73Mbps and max download speed of 220kb/s.

I called Mweb and Telkom, nothing helped.

Is there some sort of upgrades going on thats disrupting the line speeds?

I'm considering moving to Afrihost capped (unshaped): is the connectivity speed at your Telkom line speed irrespective of the package you purchase?

Thanks

Before moving ISPs get a guest account or a test account from other ISPs and see if it helps.

If it stays bad then it is a line problem or, more likely, your exchange is congested.

I get the same Steve. On a 6meg line my http speeds are sitting at 1meg. YouTube buffers. Webpages timeout. Had this for the past 2 months now. However, my telkom acc flies, so definitely a mweb issue.

Good Morning iSteve,

The speeds that you are referring to, are they speed test results or actual download speeds?

Please also provide me your MWEB account details via private messaging.

Hey iSteve

I feel your pain.

I am experiencing exactly the same issues... Correct speed during day on the line, come 18:00 though, latency on pings go insane. Anything from 500-700ms, I noted 1800ms two weeks ago while trying to play some online games.

My issue has been ongoing with Mweb for 7 weeks (Started 21 September)

The process thus far:

Log a call with Mweb
As per Mweb's request. I test using my FNB Connect account, Mweb account and the Telkom quest account. Same results on all account, so something points to the exchange
Mweb logs a call with Telkom
Telkom advises nothing is wrong with the line and closes the call
Times this process by 3.

Then my issue gets escalated at Mweb.
Telkom comes out and tells me there is no noise on my line and it is generally great, they say that my hardware is faulty.
I explain to the Telkom technician that i have used 3 separate account, tested 2 separate routers and bypassed all wiring in the house so I connect directly to Telkom jack in the wall. The line speeds you mentioned is observed WHILE the technician is there, but they state the line is fine
I do some more test as per Mweb request and send them the results.

Later Mweb advises that they have had my port reset, should be fine now, unfortunately is isn't though

Later Mweb advised something was done on the DSLAM, should be fine now, unfortunately is isn't though

Mweb starts contacting me less about the issue as time goes on, so I post on myBB.
Mweb guy says that he needs my info will follow up.. An advanced Mweb technician/engineer phones be and ask for tracert results. This info is passed on and I never hear from him again

After not having heard anything I post on Facebook
Mweb guy says that he needs my info and I should give him the results for a national and international trace route, both for the times the line is working correctly and incorrectly... This info is passed on, but nothing is resolved.

06 November I post again on Facebook
Mweb guy says that he needs my info and I am still waiting for a phone call.

This is a very long way of saying i know what you are going through and hope you have better luck getting you issue resolved than what I have.

After 7 weeks, a blanket of helplessness and acceptance has settled over me.

I've been fighting this for the past two months. Still waiting on a solution. Luckily I'm a very patient person.

Out of curiosity, are you experiencing any issues while gaming?

Hi

I will follow up on this for you right away and provide you with feedback.
I must also mention it does seems like the issue could be a congested exchange as you also mentioned that it happens on another ISP account.

I'll PM you with my findings.

Hi There,
Congested exchange is the likely cause. Do a tracert to www.google.co.za if the second hop is more than 50ms then the exchange is congested.
You should alos check you SNR and attenuation but if it gives good internet during the day and poor at night then it is most likely from people surfing the web after getting home from work.

Tim

Hey Tim the Techxpert

Maybe you could answer something for me that I have been wondering...

Mweb has told me that the problem I have is a congested exchange and all the tests I have done supports this, but something is puzzling...

Surely an exchange doesn't just get congested overnight.

Congestion is the increase of traffic to the point of the hardware not being able to optimally handle all the traffic. This can't happen overnight, can it?

If the exchange I am connecting to, has become congested, wouldn't this have happened over a period of time instead of the connection working on one day (20 September) and then congested the next (21 September)

Hi MinionOfwar

What if that day they had done the upgrades to the lines?
Not sure how you would be able to find that out though.

Regards

Tim

MinionOfWar:
Usually congestion would gradually increase till it becomes so bad that your latency would increase & download/upload speeds decrease.

Now Telkom has gone and increased all their 384kbps users' speeds to 1Mbps and their 1Mbps users to 2Mbps. This wasn't done nationwide on the same day though. Typically they moved the users over per city/suburb on the same day, which could very well be the cause for your problem, where everything is fine the one day and then the next day all broken.

Thanks for the posts guys.

I had a Telkom guy come test my line at my house and at the exchange - nothing is faulty.

I feel like I'm using a dial-up.

Couldn't play a one minute Youtube clip, fine, so I check my gmail and even that took time to load...

Thanks for the info, Tim the Techxpert & Pada

It does explain what I had been wondering.

Just wanted to thank Mweb and the Mweb guy for the effort in getting my line working again.

It started working correctly again on Thursday (15 Nov) with 50-60ms being noticed in business hours and after hours. Although I was having issues for close to 8 weeks, I am just happy it is fixed now.

Thanks again

As far as Telkom sees it, exchange congestion isn't a Fault.

So it's no surprise they came by, checked your line and said everything was fine.

Frankly, this whole Upgrade thing has been a complete joke. I am convinced no one at Telkom bother to pull out a calculator and work out the Old vs New bandwidths demands. Of if they did, management ignored them and blithely pushed ahead with a faulty plan.

Unfortunately it's us, the end-users, that have to suffer.

My recommendation for those of us on congested exchanges:

1: Log a fault
2: Escalate the fault as high as you can take it in Telkom
3: Contact ICASA and lodge a complaint using the escalated fault details
4: Contact the Consumer Protection Association

Right now I'm at step 2 and will shortly be moving to Step 3.

Maybe if enough people shout and scream they'll finally listen...
