Ok so my 13yo daughter is interested in photography and her birthday is coming up. Thinking of getting her a decent camera and an entry level instruction course. Any suggestions. Willing to spend R5K-ish

Canon 1300D.

For learning. Can be trial and error and Google/forums. There's everything she needs to know.

The 1300D would be a good choice. You can also save a little by going for the 1200D. This is very similar but without the Wi-Fi.

If she has small hands then the Canon 100D may be worth looking at, but it is a bit more expensive. In general it would be a good idea to let her handle the camera you are thinking about to see if she can get her hands around it before buying it.

First let her go "play" with some cameras in a shop. Canon or Nikon, so she can feel which one she likes. Then you go buy something like this:
https://www.olx.co.za/ad/canon-20d-for-sale-ID15ZwYs.html and add a lens to it, unless you can get a used camera with some lenses. I would rather buy a used camera on Outdoorphoto that OLX/Gumtree/Junkmail, but all mine came from the latter.

You don't know if the hobby is going to stick, so rather buy a starter camera that has lost all it's value already than a new one that will lose value. 20/30/40Ds are all semi pro, so they have alu bodies that can take more of a beating than the plastic bodies. As for a lens, go search for something like this for a start:

Camera and lens should not cost you more than R2k, which leaves R3k for a good photography course. Knowing how a camera works and how to use it is worth more than fancy kit. My 2c.

The Takealot suggestion here is nice, but that leaves you out of pocket for training. That kit also has the 18-55 lens. I would suggest Canon as used lenses etc is generally cheaper than Nikon.

Entry level canon or nikon will do the job quite nicely. These days if you buy from a local dealer they'll usually throw in an introductory course that will help her at least familiarise herself with the camera.

Photography can be frustrating at the best of times so anything you can do to help alleviate that is good. You can of course pick up a lot online but there's little in the way of feedback.

I would suggest getting a used 50mm f/1.8 lens as well. The older model used to go for R1300 new, so you should be able to pick one up for about R1k if you're patient. In my opinion as a training tool it would be better as an only lens compared to the 18-55mm kit lens. Especially if she's thinking of doing portraits. Unless she wants to do landscapes as well.

Hiya

Orms offers a free 3-hour class to people that buy cameras from them. A very important lesson to learn is that the gear doesn't make the photographer but it definitely helps :D

I would say any beginners canon (tripod is a good extra) and your set :D
