I saw someone on the forum post that their 4Mb uncapped account goes up to 10Mb, any truth to this?

At R499/m I'm quite tempted to move to them if I can see some proof of this.

I'm not a heavy downloader so their shaping shouldn't affect me, I probably do less than 100GB/m as I don't see the need in downloading the internet.

Spoke to Dexter from Plugg on the phone now, he's organising me a 24hr trial account so I can test out their 4Mb package. Will report back with some speed tests and general experience tomorrow.

So after thoroughly doing what most ISP's would call abusing an uncapped account last night, here's the results from some speedtests:

Int:

I've probably downloaded over 10GB on the trial account and everything still works as normal, YouTube streams 720p flawlessly, P2P runs at my full line speed still.

All their packages are month-to-month with no notice period to cancel.

Plugg you just got yourself a new customer as of 1 June. :D

Nice review grim - do you know which backbone they use?

They do make use of a 9 day rolling window where if you are in the top 50% of users you will get throttled during business hours if their network is taking strain.

If you stick to less that 50-60GB in the 9 days you shouldn't have an issue.

Do they have a method of checking up how much you've done in the window?

Between 500Kb/s and 1MB/s depending on the source
That's very nice. Recently my line was upgraded to 6Mb and would like to be able to use "the speed". Spoke to PLUGG and got myself a test account as well. They confirmed that account will run on my line speed. Will test it tonight and will share my experience. Little bit worry about 9-10 day rolling story. I'm a heavy user.

Define heavy?

They told me if I stay under 60GB in the window I'll be fine and tbh 6GB/day is more than enough for my needs.

They have a usage tracker on their site, not sure how detailed but it does also show if you are being throttled via a star system.

Well depence, but i would say 500-600Gb per month. Watching oversees TV chanels, sport, occasional blockbuster movie all in 720p. Will see. Will test the account tonight. Using Axxess 899 rand account, but looking to cut the cost if it's possible.

@ grim; Note, that many ISP's advertise their capped & uncapped services as "up to 10 Mbps".

However, in truth this only relates to local access portion and the majority of ISP's, like Afrihost, WebAfrica, etc. still restricts the international access portion to 4 Mbps.

Do ensure that you obtain explicit confirmation on this from a prospective ISP and verification on the capabilities and restrictions (especially amount of allowed active simultaneous IP connections, contention ratios etc, but not limited to this) of the account.

All uncapped accounts are not equal, therefore ensure that you have thoroughly investigated what you are purchasing and what the cost implications might be. If you find that a prospective ISP is reluctant to be tranparent in their dealings with you, request a test account and verify any claims at sites like http://www.measurementlab.net.

Comparisons like these; http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/48861-all-in-one-uncapped-adsl-pricing-comparison.html are meaningless without additional information. - In the author's defence, many local ISP's are reluctant to share the information that is required to make an informed decision.

As a rule of thumb; (in most instances) the cheaper the account, the more restrictions apply, however the reverse does not hold true.

I've been using their 4MB uncapped for a few months now - no complaints

Works 100% full line speed - I do 200GB - 300GB per month

+ side is that it comes with 2 concurrent connection

I share it with a buddy on a 1MB line who hardly downloads yet still pays half :D

Used the test account last night. DL from Bulgarian and Russian trackers. The account works great. I was getting 620-630k constant speed. Watched for an hour and a half some Bulgarian and Russian TV channels, no buffering what so ever. Now the million dollar question is when are you getting throttled on this account. The problem is, that all the time i will have to monitor my usage and to worry if i'm going to be throttled. Otherwise the account is madness for this price. Would really recommend it if you have 6Mb and higher line and you are fine with the 60Gb 10 days window. Which for me is just way too little. BTW just bought a 10Mb account from Axxess for R.159. will give it a try this month. They said only the top 20% of the users are getting throttled instead of 50% for a 4Mb. Should give me a good indication how the PLUGG account will work.
