Hi Everyone, just a warning if you are a Firefox or Tor user. I got a thread detection from my antivirus that it found something bad in "plugin-container.exe". Now this is not a new problem but the thing is I downloaded Firefox from its legitimate website. This means I got an infection from a legitimate install file. Now this exploit as far as I can tell goes back to 2013 but I am not sure about that. I am running multiple scanning tools to see what is happening but if this continues I will jump ship from Microsoft. I cannot worry about my stuff all the time. I will never get any work done.

Right, so a second scan with the Microsoft tool showed no infection. Microsoft antivirus showed no infection. McAfee shows no infection. I guess it nipped it. But I will just do another scan after I restarted the system. Just to make sure. But this is stupid because Firefox is supposed to be one of the safest browsers one can use next to Brave.

Woah there...calm your horses.

First upload it to VirusTotal to see if it really is malware. How many detections on VT and what does it get detected as.

Highly unlikely, as in 0.0001% chance, that FF downloaded from the legit site contained a infected file. More than likely your system was already infected with something from downloading suspect content via TOR

rather focus on your studying instead of wasting time fixing a silly "virus" :D

Nope, my Tor lives on a VM with its own VM access point on its own physical nic. I am really getting good at this stuff. This was a legitimate download gone wrong. However, a search shows that sometimes it can be a false positive. But who can risk that.

My computer does a scan after every restart. I keep it empty mostly so the scans are 10 to 15 minutes. It got detected in those scans. It is very concerning as I don't easily access websites that are not legitimate.

Could have been anything. You must have done something to lead to it.... or a plugin updated and was picked up as bad.

I beg to differ.

This was a legitimate download gone wrong.

There is 0% chance that the download from the official FF souce contained malware. If it did thousands of users would have been infected and FF would have pulled it. Would have also been reported all over the security feeds.

However, a search shows that sometimes it can be a false positive. But who can risk that.

If it's a FP then it's your AV software at fault and not FF

Did you upload it to VT? What were their findings?

Dunning, meet Kruger. OP is going to have quite a shock when they discover that Mac also has viruses.
