Hi guys,

Recently we noticed drain flies in our kitchen area, it's believed the sewer pipe (it's inside the wall leading out) is rusted and therefore causing the flies.

We got a quote for like R10,000 which is alot but advised to check our insurance if we are covered.

The cover is with outsurance and have contents cover but nothing about structural. We do have home assist but it's for emergency burst pipes etc.

We plan on calling them soon to see what they say, but I'm doubtful they will cover it , is there anything we can possibly ask or do to help our claim etc.

Do you own or rent?
If you rent owners problem. If you own you should have home owners insurance which is the building.

And you don't have building insurance cover?
So we have the car on it and contents but the person also told us about home assist (Help Out) that they will assist with burst pipes etc and at the time it was the best because my mum only pays things and couldn't afford more.

Only thing we can do is phone them and see what they say

Are you talking about the drain of the sink? That is usually a 40mm PVC pipe. Just drill a hole through the wall and extend the pipe to a gulley. R10 000 is insane.

No, not that. Wish it was that cheap and simple. We have one of those houses were the sewer pipe is in the house and there's a possible leak underground also, so the plumber said they'll have to dig and then also have the pipe outside. So it's quiet big job apparently.

In that case I would get a camera in there and see where the leak is, hopefully it's outside. Not sure why you would put a sewer pipe inside the house like that. If it's a real big pipe you can possibly put plastic inside and just dig up the connections.

It was my grandads house and it was like this from those days. All house had it inside for some reason.

Will just see what they say in terms of insurance etc.

sounds like you just got home contents cover and not building insurance. Unfortunately home contents might cover 1 hour of labour and not the full job.

Agreed. I'd get a second opinion and have them run a camera through the pipe to see what's going on.
