I got a quote from a plumber to fix my shower. I want to know if this seems reasonable. I don't really have time to get numerous plumbers out to quote.

The quote says:
Tiler (subcontractor) (to retile the shower floor) - R1350
Materials - R1220
Plumbing flat rate - R900
Rate for 4 additional hours - R2400 (600 per hour)
Total - R5870

Then, the quote says:
Remove shower door frame.
Strip shower floor tiles, expose trap and drain pipework and expose spout outlet pipework.
Supply and install a new Gio 120 shower trap with pipework to suit.
Supply and install new shower outlet wall plate with pipework to suit.
Plaster area of outlet and screed area of trap.
Install new mosaic floor tiles.
Reinstall shower door frame and install new shower arm and rose.

*Note that the raw materials for the work is to be supplied by XXXX Plumbing.
*Note that the tiles, shower arm and shower rose are to be supplied by the client.
*Note that the tiling is to be completed by a subcontractor and XXXX Plumbing will oversee the installation. (Note that XXXX Plumbing will note be on site though out the entire tiling process).

Sounds reasonable, given it's a small job..

I would be wary of the note regarding the plumber overseeing the subcontractor installation, but following that they further note that they would not be on site during the entire tiling process..? How are they overseeing the subcontractor then..?

Get clarity on that, else of the subcontractor does something wrong and messes up, they could come back and say that it was noted to you they would not be on-site.. make sure you get clarity in writing..

Is there any glass work required, i.e. removing a glass shower door? If so just confirm with them that they should be liable for replacement if they damage it, unless something is stipulated in the contract.

What are the four additional hours for? Surely they can say up front what the job will entail and quote accordingly?

That just seems like some bullshit that effectively doubles the quotations and will inevitably lead to them taking their time and then charging for it regardless.

Maybe extra hours are for tiler? Other wise quote looks ok.

I assumed it covers the removal and installation of the shower door/frame and installation of the fixtures..

It's R600 per hour for the plumber to oversee them. Methinks the owner can do that.

The R900 is probably for callout and to get going.

The other 4 hours is probably for:
Remove shower door frame.
Strip shower floor tiles, expose trap and drain pipework and expose spout outlet pipework.
Supply and install a new Gio 120 shower trap with pipework to suit.
Supply and install new shower outlet wall plate with pipework to suit.
Plaster area of outlet and screed area of trap.
Install new mosaic floor tiles.
Reinstall shower door frame and install new shower arm and rose

Remember to budget for not only the tiles but the tile cement, grout and spacers, also suggest waterproofing the floor screed before tiling starts.

Seeing that it's a smallish job, and they will have to be there prob for 3 days minimum, to allow for curing, it's reasonable.

This is what I generally call a F off quote unfortunately, you have to make it worth his time.

All i can say is get a firm quote for everything. Down to the cents. Anything on there which says tbc or similar, tell them to put an amount down or walk away

Sounds reasonable for the effort.

This. It might not sound like much, but 3/4 bags of tile cement, spacers, grout, and if it needs bonding liquid added (because it's in a wet environment) can quickly add a few hundred bucks to your quote.
