Hey,

Anyone out there tried to use PoE (Power over Ethernet) with your UTD modem. Want to shove mine in the roof with a directional antenna. Most PoE devices use 5v or 12v but the UTD uses a 9v power supply. Need one that does not regulate the source.

Any suggestions on what PoE device to use?

I have also read up on making your own PoE device, looks like a walk in the park. Look here http://www.nycwireless.net/poe/

I suggest you make your own, or take an extra cable up and preferably use a diode or even a bridge rectifier at the UTD side to ensure correct polarity

Take extra cable up and save the hasle
Use PoE when devices come supporting this.

If anyone is interested Planet and a Regulated PoE unit, that comes with a 15v power supply + a injector / splitter. The Spliter can be set to output 5, 9 or 12 volts. Cost is about R450.00 incl VAT. Not exactly cheap, but wins on the ease factor.

All I can say is my bandwidth BETTER improve as my modem generally shows full signal, but I only get 20 - 30Kbpps throughput!

Ethernet only uses points 1,2,3 & 6 of the plug(clip facing down, counting from the left) you could crimp your own cable just to use these 4 wires & the other 4 could be used for your 9volts DC. cost - 2 ethernet plugs, & one dc adaptor - total R20.00 I'm sure any computer shop would crimp the plugs for minimal charge :)
