I'm considering upgrading my camera from whatever is in my phone to something that can take a picture of an owl sitting on the roof, or of a zebra standing 30 m away. I have zero background in photography, so other than occasionally fooling around with manual mode I'm likely to use a camera in automatic mode.

Looking at used cameras, e.g. those at cameraworld, there seems to be quite a few options in the R 2000-3000 range. That seems a reasonable range for me - I don't want to spend much more on something that I'm only going to use occasionally.

My father is using a Canon 5D Mark II, so ideally I'd like to be able to borrow lenses from him without having to buy an adapter.

What are good used options in R 2-3k range, and what are typically things to look out for? Canon's model numbers most certainly doesn't seem to follow the "higher is better" trend.

Could also consider something with a fixed lens...portable, cheaper (than buying additional lenses), less hassle. I still have an old Panasonic Lumix that's a lot of fun to play with.

I’ve considered that, but if I get something that takes lenses compatible with the Canon D5 I can borrow lenses from my father, and if I buy lenses he’ll also be able to use them.
