Just had an email back from Point Topic saying they are investigating telkom's profile as submitted to them by Telkom against the stats quoted by RPM in the ITWEB article yesterday. Now lets see if Telkom will be forced by INTERNATIONAL regulators and research groups to start reporting the TRUTH!
For those of you who dont know, point topic (www.point-topic.com) is a research group who profile DSL offerings worldwide - their research is mostly used by industry players and not suprisingly, research divisions of investment banks for their traders. This could have real impact on Telkom on a corporate level. he he :p

I don't want to seem the eternal pessimist, but my crystal ball tells me that Telkrap will merely dispute anything published by Point Topic, saying that their findings are coloured by vested interests, being a private agency (pot calling the kettle black?). Had a brief look at their site, and couldn't help reacting to this (OMG! What an unfortunate name!):
Haroon Butt, Senior Analyst
Haroon Butt now edits Point Topic Operator Source Profiles. He was responsible for the Point Topic DSL Worldwide Directory, Edition 8, and joint author of the Point Topic Business DSL Report, and of surveys of cable modem offerings. He is also responsible for compiling Point Topic’s quarterly DSL statistics.
Before joining Point Topic, Haroon worked for V3 World, a mobile commerce solutions company. He has a degree in Business Management from Westminster Business School.

Excellent news. I look forward to the outcome. Thanks for the feedback Peapod.

LOL
I know, very unfortunate but a hell of a nice guy nonetheless.

Telkom can dispute anything they like but cannot disregard FACT and the FACTS will be published by Point Topic for all the worlds industry players to see - because they ALL use Point Topic. Heh heh

As acknowledged by Telkom and others, Telkom have very little experience in the big world of business. They are the heavy-weights in South African business where they are protected, but against a International business backdrop? They will get force fed the stick they have been beating us with. This will no doubt be the point of the sharp end, of the World Business stick, that pokes them in the proverbial eye. Cool :p

And it gets better.....

I read a thread ( http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=20091) about proudly south african branding and particularly Telkom's response to some criticism levelled at at them about their pricing structure where they quote an international benchmarking company called TARIFICA (see www.tarifica.com) and how Tarifica have given Telkom the thumbs up on pricing when compared to a magical 26 other countries....blah blah blah you can read it all on the relevant thread.
Anyway, I have been in touch with the head of research for Tarifica and the head of Africa research at Tarifica and sent them the article published in ITWEB on the 4th May.
Hopefully this goads them into action to analyse the information Telkom discloses to them against whats really happening in SA and enable them to publish the TRUTH about Telkom. I have also sent them verbatim the dialogue from the PSA thread, including Telkom's response.
Lets see what the cat drags in.....heh heh heh :p

Telkom pays Tarifica to do extra analysis for them - i.e. find the products, no matter how crap, which could be even 1% cheaper. They always mention that their 64k leased line is cheaper - yes it WOULD be - no one in any respectable country actually uses 64k anymore.

Nice going Peapod, I get the point-topic newsletter and go to their site often, they have some amazing stuff.. As for Tarifica.. well, they're tarnishing their name, same as Markinor.

At the MyAdsl hearings, Telkom promised ICASA to get them the Tarifica report *if it existed* (at the hearings, when ICASA asked Telkom to give them the report, Telkom initially denied knowing that such a report existed - dont worry, I made sure this lie was pointed out to the panal).

I dont think the Tarifica report was entirely favourable to Telkom, judging by the secrecy and lie Telkom tells about this report. The Genesis Report agrees with my argument - they also threw out the Tarifica report from their literature review based on all the misinformation and lack of clarity surround findings from a holistic point of view, and well as the fact that basics facts, such as methodology used, are not publicly known.

I will email ICASA and ask if Telkom has since furnished them with the Tarifica report.

Telegeography has in their newsletter for 6 May included:

Broadband out of reach for majority of SA consumers
A study by South African web site MyADSL has found that broadband services in the country are too costly for the majority of citizens. According to the study, a high speed internet connection from one of South Africa’s main providers costs anywhere between 46% and 105% of the country’s average monthly wage. By contrast, the study claims that in the US, UK or Japan an equivalent service would cost the around 1% of an average salary.

Yup.. let it be known how Telkom shafts SA. Then there's this article about Vietnam dropping its international bandwidth prices by up to 40%.. now how bad do we look..

The Tarifica report has nothing to do with data costs but only local peak, off peak and international call costs.

Subsequently ICASA having the report in their hands will be of no help.
Unfortunately that is not entirely correct:
http://www.telecomweb.com/tarificadb/toc.htm

Coverage:
Fixed services covered include:
  • Telephone, Freefone, ISDN, Internet, ADSL, ATM
  • Leased Lines, (Analogue and 64 kbit/s through to 2 Mbit/s and higher speeds), Frame Relay
  • Telex
  • PSDN
  • International, rates to all destinations for above services

Telkom keeps bragging that their 64k link is cheaper than anyone else's according to Tarifica.. which is good, because everyone wants a massive 64k connection - right Telkom? :p

Wow did anyone of you see the SABC news this evening, dear old Ivy has been offering advice  to the SADC countries on telecoms best practice, etc.,
I wonder shouldn't she first try to sort out SA....

Question: Does anyone know how large the Internet subscriber base is in SA?; I think when Telkom look at it's so-called "magical 60000 ADSL subscribers" this figure might just put this 60000 into perspective.
  • How does this compare internationally in other ADSL enable countries?
  • What about considering duration since inception of ADSL, i.e. ADSL growth in SA since public availability versus other ADSL enabled countries. I’m sure as we all know Telkom would suck, and of course they would have so many reasons to contradict why!

All I can say is that with all these Baskerville hounds (Peapod, MaD, Debbie2, etc..) on the prowl. It’s no longer if but rather a matter of when Telkom will get its come-uppings... ;)

MaD your reference doesn't prove it exists.
Well let's get hold of 2500 quid and place an order for the phantom report :)
