Hi Everyone

Is there anyone here who has applied for a Police Clearance Certificate before? I applied at a police station a few weeks ago and they sent me an SMS a few days ago to say that it has been finalized but I have no idea how it will be delivered.

They say on the website that it will be sent by post but I have my doubts.
Do they send it by registered mail to the post office or do they send it to your home address?
It says on the online enquiry that it will be delivered by hand but what does that mean? Must I go to the police station to fetch it?

I have tried phoning them but they do not answer the phone and now I have no idea where my PCC is.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

When I did mine 3 months back I used PostNet to both send and receive it. I think you may need to go to PTA and get it personally if you didn't use a postal service provider. Best is to give them a call to find out.

Yup, this. It turned out to be hella expensive (like R450 or so for them to organise collection and deliver it to Postnet), but we at least received the police clearance certificate in Cape Town no problem :)

Correct, I paid R900 the other day to have mine sent and once or is ready they will provide a collection service to my closest posnet.

Anyone know how long it takes because I have heard varying time lengths!

I also chose the PostNet route. The actual processing time for the clearance itself took something like three weeks but the handover was ready within a few days once I got the SMS mentioning that it was available for collection.

Yip, seconded. Once you get the notification it's ready for collection, you just let PostNet know and they'll trigger the collection. PostNet's end was very quick and seamless, so kudos to them for taking the pain out of this (albeit at a royal fee).

Is this police clearance like an official criminal record check to use for job interviews etc?

Yes, it's just a piece of paper that will say if you've been involved in any crimes that the police know of (kinda an important disclaimer lol). You need it for visas mostly, when travelling. Employers request their own criminal checks on you, so it's not something you'll need to provide to them.

Thanks, seems like a proper pita, intl travel is really complicated these days, never mind enormously expensive.

Did our (SO & i) police clearance two months and we got ours back(two weeks ago) via the post, after calling them every day. -

I managed to get through to the Criminal Records Centre after phoning them over 20 times. They said that my PCC was at the police station where I applied. I went and picked it up there today.

I must admit that I probably should have gone the Postnet route because dealing with those disgusting police officers was not a pleasant experience at all.

Can I obtain a letter/affidavit from the police to confirm to potential employers that I am in the process of obtaining a PCC for expunging of crim record for employment purposes? will the letter/affidavit be good enough for above mentioned purposes? Applied about 3 weeks ago for the PCC. Still waiting. Desperately looking for work. Frustrated!!!!

Have you informed the 'new' employer of the record during the interview?
What is the nature of the record?

I also went through the expungement process. Be aware that it took about 9 months before I received the confirmation that all was cleared.

Once your fingerprints are done and forms filled out at your local police station you are supposed to send it to pta, but there are a few companies in pta that expedite, if you're willing to pay a few hundred rand. Well worth it in my opinion, you have your certificate in a week. I've used two different companies in the past and both were done in around a week. Sorry, I know you've already sent yours off but for anyone else who needs it done quickly just Google it before sending your docs through official channels, they take forever.

Step 1: Go to your nearest Police Station
Step 2: You will complete a form and they will take your finger prints. The police officer will put his credentials on the form and sign it.
Step 3: At the police station, go to the finance office and pay r92.
(Make sure you have change, they still own me a r8)
You must do this during working hours. They dont do it after hours.

They will give you the fingerprint form back with the receipt.
Just add a copy of your ID.
And add a note with contact details.

Next you choose:
Go to Pretoria or use PostNet

PostNet will cost r185 from PostNet-to-PTA (overnight)
Once the receive it at SAPS PTA, you will get a sms.
They have the SAPS Clearance Dept address on their system, but you can also get it from the police station

Wait 3/4 weeks
I waited just over 3 weeks

Once done you will receive another sms with reference number to collect

Again ho to PTA or us PostNet

PostNet will cost r185.
Type a letter that you give PostNet authority to collect it for you. Include the references and your ID.

More precise guidance - you will not get...

I have found that some visa facilitation companies, i.e. http://www.visalogistics.co.za/ also offer a police clearance certificate service. Yes I have used them before, and yes you have to pay. They just made the unpleasant and time consuming task of running around, and getting all the stuff togher so mush easier. Surprisingly it was acctually quite painless and affordable! Besides who wants to go through the whole process outlined by Caldo?
