Police 'extortion' racket uncovered by the Hawks

A police detective and his female accomplice who were bust in a sting operation for allegedly trying to extort R15,000 from her boyfriend will appear in court on Monday.

The pair allegedly concocted a "rape" charge against the boyfriend and demanded he pay up to make the case "disappear".

Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke said on Sunday that the 38-year-old detective commander from Driekop police station and his 32-year-old female accomplice were expected to appear at the Burgersfort magistrate’s court for alleged corruption, extortion and defeating the ends of justice.

The two were arrested on Friday evening by the Hawk’s serious corruption investigation team after they allegedly conspired to extort R15,000 from the accomplice’s boyfriend," Maluleke said in a statement.

The punishment for such a crime should be the same as for than the actual offence the accused the other party of.

The Hawks could have been informed of this while they were busy with other "serious corruption investigations". Whoever brought this to their attention probably did not trust the traditional SAPS to do a proper job, plus the two were probably very comfortable in that environment to be brazen enough to carry this out.

My guess is that the big and tough cases involve connected comrades like Ace, Bathabili, Nomvula, Tina etc and instructions from Luthuli House are that they remain untouchable.

IPID is for complaints against the Police.

It investigates deaths in police custody, crimes allegedly committed by police officers, violations of SAPS policy, and dissatisfaction with the service provided by the police.

What I know is that IPID comes after the police had already committed a criminal offense. Also IPID doesn’t do arrests, they recommend.
